DS is turning 16. A car isn’t in the cards but I thought a MacBook might be. Then I found that they were $2800! Is there a cheaper but still authentic way to buy a MacBook? Help, please! |
You can buy refurbished. Look at Best Buy. Apple also sells certified refurbished BUT the discount isn't that great. I think Best Buy's pricing is better. |
I always buy refurbished. I believe the discount for refurbished is the same as the student discount, but double check with Apple.
I've only ever bought refurbished Apple products and never had a problem. |
Newegg.com.
We always get a used one from here Used macs do well. Also consider a lower end new model for $1300. |
Love your child. Skip Apple and buy a real computer. |
Alright smart guy, what might that be? |
He doesn't need a MacBook. A MacBook Air is fine. I always get a refurb:

My stock portfolio says Apple is better ![]() |
Refurbished is the way to go. You still get a warranty.
I bought a refurbished Dyson 6 years ago....it still works like it’s brand new. |
What are you talking about? A MacBook is $1600 or less.
|
Try Microcenter for refurbished..
PS: I have a MacBook Air (@home) and MacBook Pro (@work). I would never go back to the Air ever |
Refurb from Apple. |

Here is Apple's pricing: https://www.apple.com/mac/compare/ Where are you getting $2800 from? Plenty of options $1500 and below. If you want to buy new, drive to the Apple store in Delaware. No sales tax. |
I know, but the computers are much better quality in terms of longevity and hardware. They are not popular because the competition makes cool-looking products for less, however, if you want quality, you buy Apple. This has never changed from the time they started. The disadvantage, apart from the price, is that you have to follow their little idiosyncrasies. To me it's worth it. Please note that Apple is also a victim of tech spying. You should support a company who has done all the R&D, instead of the companies who stole the designs. |
