Expectant and Postpartum Moms
I need a recommendation for a fantastic OB/GYN. I'm 20 weeks pg and just found out I'm moving from NYC to DC area. Our place will be near the Vienna Metro stop, so I was thinking Inova Fair Oaks Hospital or Virginia Hospital in Arlington were my best bets. I will be having a repeat c-section so if you know of a doctor and practice that is fabulous I would love the name.. Thank you!
Dr. Tchabo at VHC is outstanding. If you're interested in a VBAC, it's a specialty/interest of his.
Dr. Masel with Arlington Women's Center is amazing. She's skilled, caring, and down to earth. The other docs in the practice are terrific, too. I particularly liked Dr. Crowther (another woman; all but one of the doctors in the group is women, in case that's important to you). But absolutely love Dr. Masel! Good luck! (Needless to say, the practice operates out of VHC).

Drs. Hodges/Zaita/Chin if you want to go to Fair Oaks Hospital. I think they are called the Fair Ridge OB/Gyn.
FWIW, going outbound towards Fair Oaks would be my preference over going in towards the city. |
I had a c-section at VHC nearly four years ago and had a very good experience overall. I recommend the hospital. My doctor was Jane Piness and I also highly recommend her. At the time, Dr. Crowther, who someone already mentioned, joined the same practice as Dr. Piness and I really liked her as well. (I have since moved away from DC but I understand that Dr. Piness is no longer at that practice.) I saw Dr. Crowther for three or four appts. and even considered switching to her for the surgery I liked her bedside manner so much.
I live right near the Vienna Metro as well and am 20 weeks pregnant too! I see Dr. Karen Maser and really like her. Her office is a short drive from the Vienna Metro (10 mins). I know she delivers at Fairfax Hospital. Not sure about Fair Oaks. Fairfax Hopspital is very close to the Vienna Metro (10 mins).
I had two c sections with Dr. Maser. She only delivers at Fairfax.
Another vote of confidence for Dr. Masel (not to be confused, apparently, with Dr. Maser). As a few PPs mentioned, Dr. Crowther and Dr. Masel have wonderful bed side manners. Their practice has you see all the OBs at least once during the pregnancy, so you can get a good feel for the overall dynamic. Everyone at AWC--from the front desk to the nurses to the docs, of course--were first-rate. And VHC has amazing L&D facilities with really caring nurses. Best of luck!
I LOVED Virginia Hospital Center. My main OB is Dr. Holly Masel - she is wonderful. All of the other physicians in the group are also very good and nice. Virginia Hospital Center is really the nicest hopistal in the NOVA area. All of teh rooms in the hospital are private (they do not charge you a private room rate) modern, new and clean. The nurses are very supportive, nice and patient. If you needed a NICU, they do have a NICU which is also all private room, so you or your husband (or both) can stay overnight and have total privacy. The hopsital also has massage therapists and they will come up to your room! My experience was really very positive and I highly recommend this hospital to everyone. It is NOVA's hidden jewel - I would choose this hopsital over any Inova hopsital. I have had friends who have delivered at either at Fairfax or Fair Oaks and they decided to swicth to Virginis Hospital Center for thier second delivery and they said it was like night and day. They also switched to Dr. Masel as their OB.
We just moved to Fairfax from out of state last month. Initially, we chose Dr. Jane E. Piness who delivers at VHC. She has a great reputation. However, she is a solo practitioner and in high demand, so there is no guaruntee that she will be available for delivery. After touring VHC, we were completely turned off by the ongoing construction on the maternity floor. Getting to the correct floor to check in for delivery is also confusing. The delivery room was also a bit shabby. We switched to INOVA Fair Oaks and Fair Ridge Ob/Gyn Associates in Fairfax (Drs. Hodges, Zaita, and Shin). From what we hear, Fair Oaks is more personable and newer than other hospitals in the area. Hope this helps. Good luck!http://www.fairridgeobgyn.com/
Love Fair Ridge! I'm actually a little sad I won't be using them after my delivery in a few weeks. I've never had a dr's office be so efficient (NO WAITS) and have such great doctors.
Additional Note: At Fair Ridge, you are not assigned to a specific doctor. You see all three doctors on a rotating basis. Whoever is on call will be the one to deliver your baby. I found this to be true of most practices that I was checking out. However, I'm finding that this system at Fair Ridge makes it feel like the doctors and nurses don't really get to know their patients well and are not as careful about keeping track of their care. I've already run into problems because of this in the short ammount of time I've been with them. Also, the nursing staff isn't the greatest. Some seem unsure of themselves and others are just plain rude. Unfortunately, I'm too far along to switch practices at this point. I'm realizing how much better I had it with my previous ob/gyn before we moved out here. If you can find a practice that will assign you to a specific doctor then I think you'll be much better off. |
I could not agree more. I have been with this practice for 5 years and have had two children with them. The doctors are fabulous. However, the staff and nurses are a different story. I recently dealt with them on a miscarriage issue and had a horrible experience. I could not ask a doctor any questions, no one explained anything to me and when I went in twice for follow-up blood work, which the nurses never could quite explain, the staff would not look me in the eye nor even say a simple hello or an I'm sorry. Just silence. I felt like I had the plague. I know it is not just me as my friend who is pregnant had an emergency situation that was brushed aside by one of the new doctors. And I will never forget with my second going in in full blown labor (7 cm) telling the nurse I thought I was in transitional labor and she said absolutely nothing to me. She just asked me to hop on the scale (as if that really mattered at that point). Bizarre. |
I have been extrememly happy with Drs. Jeffrey Elliot and Susanne Lashgari in Arlington. They deliver at VHC.
Based on where you'll be living, I think Fair Oaks is a much easier and closer choice (you won't have to worry about much traffic). They have all private rooms, wonderful nurses and we had a great experience there and will be going back. I use Greenbriar OB-GYN in Fairfax (Pickford, Wertheim, Gopal) and they also rotate but you will meet with them throughout so you'll be comfortable with all three prior to delivery - they only deliver at Fair Oaks.
