Turkey Baster Method?

Anonymous
Has anyone been able to conceive naturally using the turkey baster method and/or devices like Mosie Baby?

I can see this being an advantage since sex is tiring and also maybe more direct aim at the cervix / less leaking issues. curious if any success stories and considerations

There was a NYT (I think) article about a lesbian couple where one of the women conceived in this manner with sperm donated by a friend. There is a lot of information out there.

Honestly, I've only heard about this used in cases where there was a sperm donor.

Yes, we did. We are a same sex couple and used a known donor. While we were waiting for his sperm to go through the quarantine period at the cryobank and prior to getting a clinic involved, we did AI at home for about a year (not every month, but as much as possible).

It should be noted that our donor was in a monogamous relationship and had a battery of STD tests before we took this path.

We basically ordered a supply kit that included needless syringes with little plastic extended ends, speculums, and those little barrier inserts to keep the sperm in (can't remember what they're called). DW did home ovulation tests and charted her BBT in the months leading up to us starting this. Our donor did the deed, handed over a cup, and I was the one who did the rest using a speculum and a flashlight, essentially. During the time we were doing this, we connected with other women who were doing the same except most of them were ordering frozen sperm from a cryobank that is prepped for this type of insemination, not IUI.

None of this ended up working for us - DW had other issues which required ART. However, we do know another lesbian couple who did basically this same method and had success twice. I think their sperm was frozen, but still a known donor.

I want to freeze husband's sperm in my freezer and use this when i ovulate and he is traveling so I don't have to miss a cycle. Is that crazy? Would it work?

Yes, that is crazy. No, it wouldn't work. You cannot freeze sperm in your freezer. It has to be cryopreserved.

I would reach out to Fairfax Cryobank and start the process of having your husband "deposit" his sperm. Then you can go get it whenever you need it - you can certainly thaw and use it on your own. If you're using it for AI that's a different sort of prep than IVF/IUI.
