Hire someone to sort legos?

Anonymous
I am drowning in Lego pieces. We have been given 3 HUGE bins of lego (huge star wars, harry potter and other sets). DS (6) loves them, and wants to put the sets together but they are so disorganized and all mixed together. I am also an organized person and just seeing them all jumbled together stresses me out.

Is there such a thing as hiring someone to come over and create the sets for him? Should I just post a message on my neighborhood listserv and see if anyone is interested in doing this? It sounds ridiculous, but I would also love it.

Look on the Brickset forums.

Do you have all the directions? I think it might be cheaper to buy fresh boxes. It would take a very long time.

OP here. Yes - we have the directions. But the sets are thousands of pieces, and expensive. I am not going to buy new sets.

He will build new things with them, but he also really wants to build the actual set.

OP here. For advice? To see if anyone in this area would do it?

+1

I would use the bin Legos for your child to build whatever creations and if there is a particular set he wants, get it for gift giving times (birthdays, etc) It's very likely there are pieces missing from the sets even if you have all the directions

I’m, it’s going to be thousands of dollars to have someone sort your thousands of legos. No one is going to do this for $100.

If you sort the pieces by size and shape (you don't really need to sort by color if you've done this), he should be able to put the sets together with instructions from those piles. Can you take 2 hours (or 1 hour) and see how much sorting you can get done? That will give you a sense of the cost you're looking at - no reason you couldn't get someone to do this on TaskRabbit (or a similar site). You can probably weigh the legos to figure out what % you get through in 2 hours.

Give your child the instructions and let him go digging for the pieces. Each set tells you the exact pieces that are needed. Your kid can find the pieces or substitute other pieces if he wants. That's on him. The reason they are in the current condition is that he made them, broke them, and they got tossed in bins.

Paying someone to organize Legos strikes me as over the top and the current state of our Lego collection is not good.

How old is your son? Why can't he sort the Legos?

Sort by size and shape. You will need lots of little bins or ziplock bags but once you sort by shape, your son can use directions to put together. Look in 4 dot for a four dot green.

Sounds like a good job for a teenager. If you have a neighborhood listserv, post a request there.

I don't have as big of a problem but I contemplated hiring someone to sort our legos and train track sets for many months. I finally just sat down and did it and it was surprisingly easier than I thought.

If your son has a decent attention span, could you make this a long term project? For a few weeks, he (with your help) can sort the pieces by size and shape. Once the pieces are sorted, you can use the instructions to construct one of the sets. Keep that one intact while you construct the second set. Then the third set is all done.

Would be a great summer project. Then again, I love sorting stuff so maybe it's just me.

I spent a lot of time sorting out our legos by color because it seemed like a good idea and it was a complete waste of time.
