Got a couple sets as hand-me-downs for DC, these would be our first. Are Playmobil something that if I give to DC, he'll want to expand on and collect? A la Calico Critters, LEGO, Hatchimals and so on? I'm not looking to start DC on a new collecting habit since he already has several. He also has a ton of LEGO sets, which seem similar to Playmobil. Otherwise, I don't mind giving him a new toy to play with. |
we LOVE playmobil. More fun than legos and hurt less to step on. |
You can always say no to a new collection, but I would say this is not really a collectible. |
My kids don’t like playmobil. They love legos. |
My kids like playmobil a lot. Heck, *I* like playmobil. So many fun sets with great details. |
It really just depends on what your kids likes to do. Legos are more about the building. But they are hard to playwith as they break apart pretty easily. Playmobil are simpler to construct and the construction is really just the means to the end of playing with the figures and sets.

Playmobil is amazing. You don’t need a collection. My DD had a couple of small sets (people, horses, wagons, furniture) and played with them for 5 years at least. She also got one of the bigger sets (a huge zoo, I think) for a bithday but never really got into it... it was too complicated. |
+1 — everyone in our family loves Playmobil. |
I wanted my kids to like Playmobil, but it never really took. We have a few sets, and occasionally they are brought out to play with, but they're not the favorite, by any means. One DC told me he didn't like how "the legs are stuck together". I can see his point. But that doesn't mean I wasn't hoping someone would ask for the Playmobil Pyramid for Christmas. (They didn't.) |
My daughter loves playmobil. My son doesn’t.
Both kids still love Legos. |
My teens still sneak in a little time with their Playmobil! We had some Legos, but they got much less use in comparison.
Look at it this way: do you really want to avoid giving him something he might like better than his current toys? Would it be a problem if he started wanting Playmobil (or some other type of toy) more than the toys he already has? |
We love Playmobil. DHs parents kept all of HIS Playmobil and it’s one of the things that holds DDs interest for a long time. |
WE didn't Playmobile and Legos have not taken off but marble runs are all the rage. |
I think it really depends on your kid. I don't think of Playmobil as particularly collectible in the sense of acquiring particular sets for the purpose of having the sets to display or something; however, they are the kind of toys that, like Legos, lend themselves to a kind of play where having significant amount makes them much more fun. As a child, I had a friend that had a huge set of Playmobil that had been built up as it passed between families. We spent hours and hours playing with that, but I barely played with the set that I received for a birthday, because it was just a single knight and his accessories. As I recall, Playmobil was fun because it had fairly detailed sets with lots of bits. I remember it as being more expensive and not readily available in our area; you had to catalog order it. The other thing that made it less fun was that it didn't have the building aspect of Legos. So, the Knights, Cowboys, and Pirates all had better looking stuff, but it was what it was. Whereas, in Lego, everything could be repurposed, and for us that meant, building the set as intended playing with it for awhile, then cannibalizing it into a giant spaceship. |
This was our experience. Lego get a lot more playtime. |
