My child wants to take health this summer (and her tech class next summer) in order to free up room in her schedule. Our high school does not offer the summer classes as an e-class so she wants to take health at another MCPS high school. I am hoping the dcum knowledge base can help with a few questions.
Is she allowed to take the e-class version of health at a different high school than hers if health is offered at her home high school in the summer as an in-person option? If she can do this, Churchill is the most convenient for us in terms of location (you still need to be there in person a few times) and dates, but because it is at Churchill, is the class much more rigorous than typical at other mcps high schools? She does well in school but attends a non-W high school. My daughter said that health is offered as an honors option in the summer but I do not see that mentioned in the MCPS summer school information - does anyone know if she is right? Will my daughter’s transcript read differently than if she were to take health at her home high school during the regular school year? I wouldn’t want this to look like she’d taken it as a summer class and/or at a different high school because she struggled in the class. Thank you for any and all information. |

Here is the signup information for MCPS elearning/blended learning, which is open to everyone in the county:
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/onlinelearning/registration/index.aspx Registration began awhile ago and Health is popular, so I would call the Blended Learning office ASAP to see if spots are still available. I would not worry at all about Health being a summer course. I can't remember how it is presented on the transcript, but it doesn't look weird or out of place. Many school districts now allow students to take these state requirement electives over the summer, so it won't seem odd to colleges at all. |
| If summer Health ends up being full, you could always have her get a headstart on Tech or Comp Sci. They may not be as popular in the summer. |

You're overthinking this.
Even if the e-learning class has the face-to-face meeting at your home HS, it's not being *offered* by the home HS, it's just using the building. If there's one using Churchill's building, same thing, it's not a Churchill class (and, even during the school year, health at Churchill would not be beyond your DC's ability as a non-W, this is not a thing). Not that that matters it's an MCPS class. As far as the transcript, I think your DC's HS is indicated at the top, and nothing else about exactly where classes were taken is noted. I think the completion date for a summer class is listed as the end of the fall semester, could be wrong, but I can't believe that matters to anyone. There is an honors version of the health class, it may be available in person over the summer, but no one is ever going to notice if she doesn't take the most rigorous version of health available. Getting a 5 point A in health is not worth any extra effort. |
Health taken over summer is a regular online course. Health taken during the school year is an Honors course and it is weighted higher in your transcript. It can certainly change your weighted GPA. |
| Checked the link, and it says the online course is now honors: "Starting Summer 2019, the Comprehensive Health Education course offered through Student Online Learning will be offered as Honors Comprehensive Health Education (7841)." |
Sure. But if taking it in the summer really does free up space for a quality class that is also weighted, that's the better option even if it's not a better GPA. |

My kid is doing the eLearning Health class this summer, and it is definitely listed as an Honors course. It is listed thusly:
Summer 2019 online Comprehensive Honors Health Education |

If you want to take health over summer, do you have to do it the summer from 9th grade to 10th?
Can you do it during the summer from 10 to 11? |
You can do it from 10 to 11. My DC did it from 11 to 12. Only rule is not before 9th. |
|
thanks.

This is the first year honors was offered over the summer. Some kids would not take it over the summer because it lowered their GPA. These classes are money makers for MCPS! |
|
So the kids have to take Tech, Health, and Computer Science before graduating? I knew about the getting Tech and Health out of the way online in the summertime, but not CS. I didn't even know this was a requirement! gah. I remember the counselor talking about Tech and Health but not CS.
And yes, the Health as Honors is new this year, acc to our counselor. Tech is longer (6 weeks instead of 3) - anyone know what the CS class is? Tx |
There are two classes that fill the tech requirement, foundations of tech and foundations of computer science. It's not necessary to take both. During the school year, AP computer science principles, is a third option to fill the requirement. |

$600 for the Tech course? No thank you.
