What do you do at the first sign of fever? My five-year-old woke up with a 99.8 fever this morning and he is very lethargic, doesn’t want to eat or drink. I gave him a dose of elderberry and a probiotic chewable. What else can I do to speed recovery? We are leaving on a trip in two days! ![]() |
If he has a fever, his body is probably doing what it should and working to fight off something (and 99.8 isn't terribly high). I would be concerned if it climbs quickly, but otherwise I'd just push fluids and let him rest. If he complains of a sore throat, maybe take him in for a strep or flu test since you're leaving town soon. |
And give him a fever/pain reliever. |
Fluids, rest, offering comfort foods and comfort measures. I wouldn’t give Tylenol for a low fever quite yet as the course of the fever tells a lot about the illness. |
I push extra fluids. The fever is part of fighting an infection, so I don't give an antipyretic for a low fever. |
I wouldn't give anything to reduce fever, given that it's a very low fever and fever is actually part of the body's immune response to infection. |
I wouldn’t consider 99.8 a fever. I would treat the symptoms if he isn’t feeling well. But I don’t treat fever under about 100.5. |
If he was lethargic and not eating, keep him home from school and monitor. Our Pediatrician recommends no Tylenol or Advil until the fever goes over 101, let the body do it's thing. Push fluids and rest. |
That is not a fever so I would do nothing |
This. But if he feels crappy, I'd let him stay home and rest. |
Yup. Push fluids and rest. 99.8 isn't a fever you want to treat with meds. Just keep an eye on it |
Let him rest, provide lots of fluids, and don't medicate until at least a temp of 100. Fevers are the body's way of fighting infection. I would only offer pain relief if he seems really uncomfortable. |
99.8 I don’t do anything. If it’s in the morning, I may keep from school just in case to see how it develops, but usually just measure temperature about every hour to see which way it will go. If it goes fully blown fever by end of day, close to 102, then give brufen / Tylenol and watch for additional symptoms. |
Elderberry and probiotic chewables aren't really going to do anything at this point, but if it makes you feel like you are doing something..... |
This. |
