Any Cheverly residents on DCUM?
Can anyone enlighten as to why this years mayoral and town council elections have become so cantankerous, and why "activities for teens" seems to be such a hotbed issue? |
| All those little pissant municipalities in PG are the same way. Cheverly, Seat Pleasant, Capital Heights, Forest Heights, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, Mt Rainer, Greenbelt, New Carolton, Bowie... it's the same drama, same police corruption, same financial mismanagement...just in a different town. |

I'm a Cheverly resident and I cannot figure out what is going on.
People seem really upset about a closed meeting, and about use of a gym for a town group. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=forums&srcid=MTAyNDQzMjU5NDgyMzY5MzE1MjQBMDcyODcxOTAzNzMzOTAxMzc3NjUBY2xfVThzMDRBd0FKATAuMQEBdjI&authuser=0 |
| Bowie is approximately the 5th largest city in the State. Hardly a pissant municipality. |
It has exactly the same problems, mismanagement, abusive police and petty scandals as Forest Heights or Morningside. It's definitely pissant. |
NP. Please share links to these problems. I live in Bowie and I'm not aware of any issues, but would like to be informed. |
Because the non-profit that was using the community center for their evening activities weren't supervising the kids and the director for public works found a girl giving her boyfriend a BJ in the conference room. I feel like the cantankerous vibe started when clear alliances were drawn between the candidates of different wards. Although they claim they weren't a "slate" they certainly campaigned together and appeared to be running as a group. There was a lot of negative campaigning. Also, the Ivy's inserted themselves into the election, not in a good way. Jolene was extremely vocal in her criticism of the current mayor (who wasn't even running) and one of the mayoral candidates. She went around door knocking with her prefered candidates and when they came to my house she was pretty clear in her opinion of other candidates. They sent out a letter that a lot of people interpreted as bashing the mayor and current council. I think it lost their candidate a considerable number of votes. I liked both mayoral candidates but I am glad of the outcome. The person who didn't win is a fantastic human but she associated herself with a couple of really divisive people in the neighborhood and that association made me question her judgement. The drama was also stirred up by borderline hysterical posts by the moderator of the largest listserv in town who strongly supported a slate of candidates. She posted a lot of false information and blocked people from responding. Looking at the results of the election, it seems like all the negativity bit them in the ass. Unfortunately, several friendships were destroyed in the process. |
Are you a resident of any of these municipalities and speaking from firsthand knowledge? |
Definitely not the role of the Director for Public Works. Shouldn't the health dept handle that? |
Not the PP but I live in Mt Rainier and while I love it for the most part, local politics is a complete mess. People are bitchy and entitled and racist and it’s not only white people being racist. It’s insane. When I first moved here, a neighbor told me to get on the listserve just to see how petty people could be. It has not disappointed. |
And why do you assume this bitchiness exceeds other municipalities? |
Honestly, I don't really know. It's a very diverse town ... which drew my DH and I there. It's got a lot going for it, with a big arts community. But Jesus Christ people nitpick at each other. |
I am and it's extremely true. Having so many little municipalities is really expensive and comes with a lot of really stupid problems. |
Thank you! I agree with most of your assessment. |
