Odd encounters at the mall

Anonymous
It is the second time in few months that I bring my dc at the family bathroom in a local well known mall and I find teenagers locked inside and most likely having intercourse. Is it that common? Should I notify security next time?

As I would tell my child- don’t worry about what others are doing worry about yourself. If they were playing with weapons in the bathroom tell security but they teens in a bathroom is hardly a danger to themselves or others. If I’m at the mall with my kids, I don’t have time to tattle on what other kids are doing.

How did you know it was teens locked inside? Did they come out together while you were standing there?

No. Why in the world would you run to security?

Um, what now?! What mall??

The age of consent in Virginia is 18. In Maryland and DC it is 16.

If either of the teens are younger than those ages, they are actually committing a crime. Yes, you report it to security!

Unless your own little kid is peeing in his pants because two teens are using the family bathroom to have ‘fun’. They may have been at most 14-15 and probably their parents are thinking they went shopping with a friend. Two minors making themselves vulnerable to std and unplanned pregnancies.

Those family bathrooms are almost always taken. Either by some worker at the mall who really wants to poop in private or a homeless person who needs a shower or whatever. Give up on the idea of the family bathroom being something your are entitled to use more than others. Start using the regular (or wheelchair accessible) bathroom for your kid to go potty. If the family bathroom is open, that's a bonus! Not something to count on.

This. I rarely see the family bathroom open. As for the teens, you have no proof that anything improper happened. no one is going to ban them from the mall on your say-so.

This. It really does bother me, since my 3.5 year old is terrified of those stupid loud hand dryers in all of the public bathrooms nowadays and has meltdowns in public restrooms because of it. He will use the family restroom without a problem. So when I see it ALWAYS occupied, sometimes by a single man waltzing out as I'm carrying a screaming preschooler out of the regular womens room, it bugs the crap out of me. But I just expect it at this point.

I would DEFINITELY report this immediately.
Which mall? Tyson’s?

I hate when people use the family restroom with no family. Yes, report.

This doesn't surprise me. I just left Montgomery Mall after picking up teenagers from the movie theater and I was surprised at what a teenage hangout it was on Friday night. Boys chasing girls up the escalators at Nordstroms, food court packed with hordes of flirting dorky kids. (Mine is too dorky even to flirt, he was at the Avengers.) Who knew kids still hang out at the mall to socialize?
