| This was rolled out at our ES for 3rd grade and it looks like a solid curriculum. Is that what they use for 4/5 & 5/6 as well? |
My understanding is that compacted math is not moving to the new curriculum this coming year. |
| So they’re staying with a curriculum they know that is subpar and broken. This is the kind of thing someone needs to be fired over. |
| So better math students have to suffer with a crap curriculum? |
| Ugh. My kid has done 2.0 math, Eureka math and will now have to go back to 2.0. Parents whose kids have done 2.0 compacted math, did you need to supplement/reinforce at home to make up for it? |
| Maybe each school is different. I'd ask your principal. Quick and easy email. |
| My kid will be is CES next year. I suppose I could email the new school’s principal... |
They shouldn't be different. Curriculum should be standard across the district. It's upsetting that MCPS would spend all this time picking a new math curriculum, only to use the crappy old one for the high-performing kids. |
Their new strategy for closing the gap!

I've been to meetings about this. The math office isn't happy but for next year, they have no choice but do the C 2.0 4/5 and 5/6 math courses. Eureka doesn't have the time to compile a condensed curriculum for both of those courses prior to the start of the school year. Another issue that they run into is that once the current third grade students are in 5/6, MCPS will be teaching two different curriculums - 5th grade Eureka Math and 6th Grade Illustrative math. It's far from ideal for teachers to spend half the year in one curriculum, then try and learn and teach a completely different curriculum the last half of the year.
The math office is well aware that there needs to be a solution and is working on it. Everyone is in agreement that the interim solution of teaching C 2.0 isn't ideal but on the flip side you would have parents flipping out that their child didn't have access to any advanced math at all. |
So is the idea that they will transition to a consolidated Eureka curriculum? Did they provide details about the timeline for this? |
They did not give a timeline. I'm thinking we won't hear anything until well into next school year. |
| What about IM/AIM Math in Middle School? There is no Illustrative math curriculum that covers this either. Does anyone know how they plan to get the kids prepared for Algebra by 7th grade for the middle school 6th graders? |
| Eureka Math is not that great. It’s free so that’s why it is so popular. |
| But it is an improvement and it seems a shame that capable kids have to continue with a curriculum that has been definitively found to be lacking |
