Nothing fancy. No weird size. Nothing unusual about the home. We just have an old door we want replaced.
We got a quote for $1000 for install not including door. That seems insanely high to install a door which is going to take, what, a couple of hours at most? Somewhat related...we're looking at an Anderson door at Home Depot that we were told by a different handyman was a decent door. If you have any recommendations for a good sliding door, let me know. |

We got new windows and were quoted $4,000 for a new sliding glass door.
My spouse is handy and we bought a door for $1,000 and did it ourselves. |
| We got a quote for $2500 to do a slider, door included. I think it's high too but apparently that's the going rate. |
What part of that 4k was install? |
| 1539 here. It was even more ridiculous to put in French doors. Something like 5,000. |
Okay, thanks. Originally the guy told us 2k, door included. But I asked for more specifics on which part was the door and which part was install. So he came back to us with 1k for install. It sounds crazy but it's looking like that's the norm. |
PP not sure to be honest. This was for the door and the install. In my mind the install was $3,000 because we bought a door for $1,000 but im not sure if thats how it was broken down. |
How did you come up with the schedule of a couple of hours ? Is it based on your years of experience installing doors ? Or did you pull it out of your a$$ ? What is your scope of work ? How much does the door weigh ? How many man do you need ? Who is disposing of the original ? Does it need a copper pan ? If so, who is providing ? Who is installing the casing ? What type of siding ? Does he have to recase the interior ? Does he have to paint ? Does he have to drive to your house or is he commuting in his time machine ? Are you equipped to adequately judge the job to ensure it is properly installed ? Given your expertise on estimating and pricing can I assume that's a yes... Or it is safer to assume that you are PITA. |
It is a two person job. Assuming that they are picking up the door at the store and disposing of the old door, you are going to pay for a full days labor since there is no way they can work another job that day. You might be able to find someone to do the door and another couple of odd jobs in a single day, but you are not going to get two people for a day for much less than $1000. Welcome to DMV pricing. |
Wow. You're an asshole. |
Okay, thanks. I think we're getting the door delivered but we didn't talk about disposal. |
| It cost us 2.4k back in 2015. Worth it. |
| Check home Depot and use that estimate against the contractors |
Meh. This person may or may not be an asshole, but he brings up all good points. He's not wrong and it sounds like he's either a tradesman or an experienced DIYer. |
NP. Nope, just sounds like an a$$hole to me too. Op's post wasn't jerky. |
