I used to love AT, and I even worked there part-time. In the early 2000s, there were some beautiful clothes, and at the very least, most of the clothing was made with decent materials.
AT has been declining for years, and is now simply trash. There is not a single item of clothing in that store that is made out of decent fabric. It's all synthetic garbage that feels like crap and doesn't drape well on anyone. The patterns and designs are matronly and hideous. Shapeless, tent-tops. Sleeveless everything, but with weird, boxy "cuts." Random details that don't add visual interest, they're just there to check the box of "detail." The price point is fine, but you certainly don't get what you pay for. Officially over it. |

This is happening for most brands, unfortunately, as companies find ways to make cheaper clothes for less. One important point to think about: plastic microbeads that are ingested by fish and then ingested by us. They come in part from clothing made from artificial plastic fibers that disintegrates in the soil and water. Please vote with your money and choose natural fibers whenever possible! |
| Agreed. LOFT especially went downhill fast. I worked there in 2006 and I still have a really nice lined wool skirt. Now it’s just the same boxy polyester and cotton that looks like a rag after one wash. |
This again.

Yeah, very disappointing. Also, their suit pants are really tight across the butt, so look like you’re trying to look sexy or something.
So hard to find anything that is made decently! |
Threads you are not interested in are not required reading. Move along. |

Sigh. Add J Crew to the list of garbage clothes that once were decent.
In college I bought a DKNY 100% silk chifffon sleeveless dress at TJ Maxx, it even came with a silk slip (not poly lining). I haven’t seen silk in TJ Maxx in a couple decades. |
| I just bought my first interview suit in decades. My old go-to in the corporate world was Ann Taylor, so that's where I went first. I was appalled--cheap fabrics and terrible fit. |

It's sad when you can't even buy good-quality, simple basics anymore.
Anywhere. |
Occasionally I find professional basics at Brooks Brothers premium lines or Saks or Lafayette 148 that are good quality but you have to look carefully. People on this board rave about Boden but I think a lot of their stuff is weird florals and cheesy stripes and it isn’t exactly professional. |
ALL slave labor junk made in China is bad quality. |
| No wonder retail sales are in a slump. They aren’t making anything we want to buy! |
| I used to love The Loft, but now it’s wear once and trash. Their clothes never look the same after they get washed. |
| It’s sad though bc they have reliably good fitting petites! |
| The profit horizon for any company is this: Create a desirable product that is profitable. 2) Increase profits by growing your sales base (marketing, expansion, etc.) 3) Eventually you reach cant grow sales base anymore so your grow profits by cutting costs. 4) Eventually the value proposition goes away for consumers, close business. |
