soccer craze in Northen Virginia

I live in the Mclean Franklin Sherman Elementary School neighborhood. This morning on my normal walk from my house to the Starbuck for coffee, I already see lot parents with young kids, age 7 to 10 from what I can tell, are already at the grass field right next to the school for morning soccer in the rain at 8am in the morning. I can only imagine that there will be more kids at 9 and 10am. I played D1 soccer at Ohio State University from 1990 to 1994 and I don't recall being up that early on Sunday when I was 10 years old.

Not sure why kids have to be up so early in the morning for soccer.

Are you kidding me? I grew up in NoVA and played D1 soccer 1988-1992 and we were always up early on Sundays. In fact, we gave up going to church for Sunday soccer games. WAGS was huge and we traveled every holiday weekend and summer for tournaments, regionals, etc.

This area has been a soccer hotbed for decades.

8am and rain for kids is no big deal and not crazy.

Field space is limited games start at 8am and go all day.

Not sure why you have to walk to Starbucks for coffee at 8 am on Sunday.

Let me guess, they were shrieking and laughing and having fun too. And it will go on all day. Oh the humanity. Heaven forbid.

Well I for one would rather my kids sleep until noon then stay in watching TV or playing video games. That would be a much better use of time.

OP, are you serious?

Do you know where you are?

This NoVa!

If your kids aren't overachieving, they're falling behind. College app / resume building starts at conception.
Plus, Mom and Dad need to be able to tell their friends that their kid is gonna get a soccer scholarship!

Yes- they could just be fat asses like the majority of American obese kids.

You are posting on a soccer forum, btw.

Soccer provides the best cardio. After years of playing soccer, I transitioned to marathon running. I loved playing as a kid, even the early morning games and my base level of fitness has always been high since and carried into adulthood.

While you are getting your leisurely coffee, I’m most likely at a Spinning class or going for a morning run.

No surprise. Langley boys and McLean girls have both won state titles in soccer.

Because field space is so scarce. Seriously, are you not that bright?

You have a poor memory, OP. This has been happening for years and the children won’t melt in the rain.

You are a guy, huh? The women’s team didn’t start until 1994 at OSU.

A) I'm aware I'm posting on a soccer forum, and its completely relevant to what I said.

B) I don't drink coffee.

C) Congratulations, Karen! You're winning at life!

I also live in that neighborhood and wondered why kids at that age had to get up that early in the morning for soccer. On weekdays, Franklin Sherman ES kids do not go to school until 9:15am. Why so early on Sunday? Don't kids need a lot of sleep?

I have a 7 years old and a 11 years old. They go to bed at 8:30pm on Saturday night and do not get up on Sunday until 10am. They have private tennis lessons at Mclean Sports and Health but that do not start until 1pm.

I like the early morning games- it means that the rest of the weekend we can do other stuff.

If my kids sleep in past 8:30, they are ill. This is abnormal.
