Prepping/Scamming the Cogat

Call FCPS AAP office. Ask for Carol Horn. Ask about prepping. Give your name and your childs name.

Why is my name or that of my child relevant to the answer to the question? Did you take a logic course in K?

Carol Horn must be the authority on the policy and illegality of students prepping for tests?

Has she done any research lately to discover that parent and their students in FCPS are at the top of the highest spenders on "test prep" in the US (e.g., Princeton Review, Kaplan, C2 educate). In fact, their own schools offer "test prep" year round and during the summer. And they even charge their clients for this. What an irony. What credibility does FCPS or the secretary Carol Horn have in this area?

Seriously, you must be kidding

In our utopia of free enterprise that is America everyone should be allowed to compete with FCPS in the marketplace of "test prep." FCPS should not have a monopoly on "test prep" for students.

She runs the aap program. She is the county authority. You need to go back on your meds

Does FCPS offer a prep course for the CogAT?

There is no mention of this on their website. More Urban Myth methinks.

Yes, there is.

Oh, please! Would it be better if I said that kids who have to prep for these tests really aren't that bright?

More drivel. Just like saying Michael Phelps or Tiger Woods is a poor swimmer or golfer because of the intense prep (hours daily) since the age of 5.

Actually, it's not. Woods learned to golf at 2, but Phelps didn't start swimming till 7. Both men likely wouldn't have reached the top of their sport if not for intensive practice, but they also had the innate ability and genetic make-up to excel. Woods was considered a prodigy and his father was a pro-golfer, which is why we haven't seen tons of kids whose parents pushed them into golf at 3 become the next Tiger-like phenom. My guess is if Woods had to take a test in grade school to measure athletic ability or potential, he pretty much would have had to just show up.

So true! You can "prep" all you want, but true ability will shine through. All the hard work in the world won't help if talent is not also there.

No. Just hoping to get you flagged

If you believe the Koolaid you drink you shouldn't worry about other children working and preparing hard for test. Why the angst?

The chess team members practicing chess...science Olympiad practice is more like athletic prep. Cogat prep is like steeling the play book or bribing the umps

Yes, people earlier on this thread suggested checking with the school AART about the specific materials parents are planning on using with their children. It's a good idea, but apparently people don't really want to know what is and isn't okay to use according to FCPS.

I have no problem with people prepping. Just admit it on the aap parental form. Admit it to the aart. See what happens

You want to flag my adult 3 kids ... retroactively? They did not take GoCAT in their time and when I last saw them this test was not on the horizon. You have fallen flat on your face again with your logic.

No angst here, but others appear to have drunk the Koolaid that says the test prep can make any difference in the long run.

Why? They are both tests. Just like the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
