Would they do this in ES as well? The mom in this story had HS kids.

I have 2 girls and a boy, and from what I hear the ES Boy's Bathrooms are FILTHY. My girls would NOT want to have to use them!

Ha, true. Conversely my neat nick son would be delighted to be able to use the girls' bathroom instead.

How would the urinals work?

Absolutely not ok.

My son too but not a chance I'd be ok with mixed bathrooms in high school. That is a disaster waiting to happen. Isn't there enough bad stuff in our high schools right now?

It says they are looking into having private stalls. Maybe each stall would get a urinal and a toilet? Or they'd just skip urinals. Most people don't have a urinal at home, so they would just have toilets in individual stalls.

The mom in the article specifically talks about how this has been an issue and there has been bullying in HS regarding this issue.

“This means no girls’ rooms and no boys’ rooms — just restrooms,” she said.

My DD said she will never ever use the bathroom again.

Seriously. Though, really it would apply in MS also. I'm not thrilled with the idea of 8th grade boys and 6th grade girls using the same bathroom either. How would they monitor to ensure there were no issues?

My impression is that this would be a matter of ADDING gender neutral bathrooms, in addition to existing bathrooms.

I think it is a great idea, and long past time.

Was anyone at the Board meeting? What was the BOE reaction?

Not according to the article. Specifically says that the mom wants there to be no 'girls' bathrooms or 'boys' bathrooms. Simply gender neutral bathrooms.

I’m a liberal and I think this is a terrible idea. Biological girls have to deal with menstruation—not easy doing that with boys peeing next to them. Maybe a designated bathroom in the school that’s open to everyone, but not all welcome to all bathrooms across the board.

I have a son and daughter and find these things so unimportant. You can have gendered bathrooms and trans kids can go to any they choose to; you can have non-gendered bathroom with stalls for urinals and toilets and that would make it easier in my opinion, but really... why get heated up about this?

Far more important to our children's well-being is overcrowding in MCPS and developers' corrupt influence on the Council, who keeps approving more greater percentages of legal overcrowding, and more construction with no expedited system to build more schools.
That is a real scandal, if you're looking to pour your energy into something.

It's tough enough being a MSer. Even getting changed for PE is an ordeal for my neighbor's kid.
