MCPS Looking Into 'All-Gender' Bathrooms in Schools

It says they are looking into having private stalls. Maybe each stall would get a urinal and a toilet? Or they'd just skip urinals. Most people don't have a urinal at home, so they would just have toilets in individual stalls.

People are more careful at home than they are in public. Men would pee everywhere (not that girls already don't leave pee on the seats..)

I think it is a great idea, and long past time.

Not according to the article. Specifically says that the mom wants there to be no 'girls' bathrooms or 'boys' bathrooms. Simply gender neutral bathrooms.

Who is this mom? It really doesn't matter because she will not prevail, for safety reasons if nothing else. Adding a gender neutral bathroom would probably fly though I wonder if most facilities could accommodate this.

Well, if MCPS is willing to look into it, there is always a possibility.

A group of parents from my kid's school went to the BOE about a few things, and we didn't really get much of (if any) response. The article makes it seem like this is something the Board is interested in addressing.

I’ve had decades of psychiatric anxiety issues due to no stall doors in my high school bathrooms. This will only give more kids a lifetime of anxiety issues . This is horrible

The Aria in Las Vegas has a restaurant with unisex washrooms. Everyone enters through one door and there is a long mirrored wall with sinks and hand towels and an attendant. Inside that room are individual doors to toilets for men and women. Once you've done your business you come back to the communal room to wash your hands, likely next to someone of the opposite sex. I've got an open mind (and was not without a beverage or two at the time) but it was creepy AF for an adult. I could see how it would be mortifying for a MS student.

Let's spend our money elsewhere.

I guess the argument for it could be that bad stuff happens even when MCPS has separate bathrooms. So, why not just make unisex bathrooms and see what happens?

I have a son and daughter and find these things so unimportant. You can have gendered bathrooms and trans kids can go to any they choose to; you can have non-gendered bathroom with stalls for urinals and toilets and that would make it easier in my opinion, but really... why get heated up about this?

Far more important to our children's well-being is overcrowding in MCPS and developers' corrupt influence on the Council, who keeps approving more greater percentages of legal overcrowding, and more construction with no expedited system to build more schools.
That is a real scandal, if you're looking to pour your energy into something.

we didn’t even have stall doors when I went to high school and I’d imagine with juul they still don’t have stall doors so kids don’t vape

+1. This kind of stuff is pushing me out of MCPS altogether and into privates/Catholic.

Tons of restaurants have non-gendered bathrooms now, my workplace has them - the DCPS my kids go to has non-gendered bathrooms (in addition to old-fashioned gendered ones) I think the fine children of MoCo can deal.

I have never seen this in restaurants, unless you mean those single-room restrooms which isn’t what MCPS is considering.

Totally agree. I'm seeing this kind of thing in more and more restaurant restrooms. HATE IT.

+2.

As a matter of fact, we're going to private next year with one kid, and once finances allow will do the same with the other.
