Anyone here close off or get estimates to close off a 2 story foyer?

I loathe my 2 story foyer. Not only is it wasted space, but it is a conductor of extreme noise up to our second level bedrooms

Looking for feedback from someone who has done this or seriously researched it.

All I want to say is bye felicia to anything 1990s in my home!

A noble goal. Good luck to you!
I know people who have done this and they have been very happy with the results, but I have no idea of the costs.

no idea. but if you have enough space already, I wonder if could find some stylish fabric panels or something similar that would go on the walls of the foyer to absorb the sound. Make sure there's a rug on the floor. This sort of thing can make a huge difference.

Can't help on the costs, but here are two articles I found about how people did it.

I'm not a fan of the two story foyer, and really like what they did in the Apartment Therapy post

We’re under contract for a house with a two story foyer AND great room. We haven’t even closed yet and I’m already thinking of how to close it all off. Sure, maybe it looks good but I can tell that it’s not for real living with kids. Friends say it’’ll lower the value if I change it. I say i’d be doing future buyers a favor. Glad i’m not the only one who thinks this way.

We built a new home with a 2 story foyer because we wanted natural light. It's a small 2 story foyer 12 x 6 feet and it's great. The house is 8000sf so maybe the noise isn't that much of an issue because it's proportional to the house?

To add we didn't get a 2 story family room and have 10 foot ceilings.

Our house is 5,500 sqf and we don’t really need the extra space closing off either the foyer or the living room. I just don’t like the sounds. We currently have a first floor laundry and would love a 2nd floor laundry. Would that add some value? What would you rather have? An impressive looking two story living room with balcony 2nd floor hallway or space 2nd floor laundry?

That Apartment Therapy post is amazing! Without any verticle supporting beam in the center, I'd wonder how feasible this is for a larger space?

Funny that the WaPo article about the 2 story foyer as a beast (impractical) is 15 years old. Yet, how long did the 2 story foyer continue? And why would you build one?

That Apartment Therapy post is amazing but I would have liked to have seen an after picture of the lower floor now, the entry. Now with a much lower ceiling. Sure, the second story looked cool. I'm betting the first floor doesn't look so good.

It wasn't much to begin with. Do you see how you can't open the door all the way?

Definitely a laundry room.

Am I the only one who is afraid of a small child or a curious child of any age falling off that damned balcony and dying? I HATE two story foyers.
Hate them with a passion.

Dumb builders think that people value it.

Believe it or not in the south they’re still putting in popcorn ceilings in new houses. No one likes popcorn ceilings!

Not the only one. When we looked at a house with a two story family room, I figured eventually one of the kids would want to jump onto a pile of pillows or something.
