NOGALES – Despite record seizures of fentanyl at U.S. ports of entry on the southern border, a rise in overdoses is forcing law enforcement officials in some border communities to change their tactics, emphasizing information and public engagement, as well as drugs to reverse opioid overdoses. From 2015 to 2017, fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the U.S. tripled, to 28,466 from 9,580, according to a National Institute on Drug Abuse analysis of data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Arizona, the number of such deaths rose from 1,274 in 2015 to 1,532 in 2017, according to the CDC. The Drug Enforcement Agency’s 2018 National Drug Threat Assessment said fentanyl and other synthetic opioids now are the most lethal category of opioids in the United States, partly because drug traffickers are increasingly mixing fentanyl into other drugs without the street dealer’s or user’s knowledge. And it’s not just adults who are increasingly using the pills. One arrest was made at San Luis High School where a student was found with 46 blue M-30s. With fentanyl distribution moving directly into the local high school, the police department has increased its visibility and engagement. |
There is no crisis. Nothing to see here. Move along. |

This is why he wants his wall. His voters keep od’ing |
Typical lib. Fentanyl is getting into high schools and it’s all about those dumb Trump supporters. None of you gives a damn about America. |
I hope law enforcement have proper training and equipment to protect themselves in handling all of these drug seizures and overdoses. Must be a horrible job. |

I think the case could be better made that Republicans don’t give a damn about America, what with their treason, how much they hate protecting voting rights, how they will choose businesses over people every time including not punishing the families in America who helped create the drug crisis in the first place. |
There have always been a mind blowing amount of drugs coming through Nogales. |
It's hard to take the sudden GOP outrage seriously. Why didn't they address this during the first two years when they had complete control? Obviously their priorities were rewarding their wealthy overlords with tax cuts. |
Any legislation dealing with immigration would have passed in the house. It would have also passed in the Senate, but would have fallen short of the 60 votes needed since we are seeing that Democrats have no intention of doing anything about illegal immigration or the drugs and crime that come with it. |
pp here. Clarification.... it wouldn't have PASSED the Senate - it would have received a majority vote, but not the 60 required. |
Trump could've accepted the $25bil in border security money. A wall along the Rio Grande will take years to build due to environmental issues on the river and eminent domain. In the mean time, he could've taken the $25 bil for high tech border security which is a lot easier and faster to implement. Trump's head was stuck on the wall, whether that's due to him wanting to fulfill his campaign promise, or he likes 20th century solutions rather than high tech solutions (he's notorious for wanting old fashioned solutions like using steam on navy ships), I don't know. |
+2 Everything is perfectly normal and anyone saying otherwise is a crazy person pushing propaganda. ![]() |
Fentanyl is a relatively recent epidemic. It’s not the same as the ongoing opioid issue. |
