Are Admits/Denials all over this year with your kids?

Following my DD and her friends has been a rollercoaster this year. My oldest did not seem to have this much craziness.

My DD was just accepted RD for Georgia Tech today. OOS chances for RD was 10% - a complete long shot. Her friend who she thought may be the only one her school to get GT was denied, not even WL. She feels terrible. But then again, in January, my DD was rejected

Whoops, Rejected from UMD and Ohio State.

Finding this all over with her friends. Wondering if it elsewhere.

No such thing as safeties and targets anymore. Reaches are even far reaches.

It is like any given Sunday

Who reads your app. Who sees something someone else doesn’t. With the abundance of apps, college admissions needs to weed out those considering their school a safety they will never go to now. How much effort or interest is a big deal too.

I am not a fan of the common app. I truly think it has made a ton of money for the school, but has made admissions job so much harder. Great kids are being looked over at so many schools due to the influx of half-hearted apps flooding in.

See the post on applying to multiple schools.

Most folks do it in order to compare aid but given the volume of applications you almost have to apply widely - especially if you do not have the luxury of applying ED early in the cycle. It's tough out there and you have to work to make your own luck.

Congrats to your DC on Georgia Tech !

OP, your daughter was admitted to Georgia Tech but denied at UMD?

Last year was all over the place for us, but biggest surprise was being rejected by a couple of safeties.

Yes! Not even freshman connection offered. And not flat out rejected from Ohio state, but deferred and have yet to hear from them. So basically she considers rejection, because all the merit/scholarships are gone. Only reason she even applied to Ohio was the full tuition scholarship for leader/diversity. She thought she could get a decent scholarship. The school was beyond a safety on Naviance, even with a non weighted GPA. Surreal.

Admitted to Tulane but denied at UMD.

This thread scares me. DD is a junior and I’m afraid that she won’t even get into her safety school. I’ve been hearing about a lot of well qualified kids being rejected from UMD CP.

These schools care a lot more about Yield then they used to.

Congrats on Tulane - that’s not an easy admit.

Of the 12 kids i know who applied only one was waitlisted. It’s pretty easy to get in. That said, many of those 12 are definitely going and very excited about it.

Well-qualified kids get rejected all the time do she needs to do her research and know it is hard.

Also keep in mind that a safety school is one with at least a 50% admit rate that you can afford and your kid would be happy attending. If your child applies to 2-3 that fit that definition they won’t be shut out. It is far harder to find these than fixating on a dream school.
