Private & Independent Schools
|
I am aware of the church and state issue, but I know that this is done in NY and PA. So there must be some wiggle room there. Also, in MC I think public school buses are used to take kids to private special ed programs.
I am not sure, but I read somewhere that there are 40,000 kids in MC using private schools, a big cost savings to the county. Using public school buses would be a relief of the congestion and gas consumption, benefiting everyone. Does anyone know of previous attempts to allow something like this? |
| I haven't heard of it, but I do know that MoCo doesn't have the funds to expand service like that, at least not this year. It's running a huge deficit. |
|
Surely if you can afford private, you can afford to spend gas to transport your kid.
your choice, your problem |
|
pp -- you are rude. Why are you on the Private School thread if you don't have kids in private school? Those of us who send our kids to private schools still have to pay taxes - so we're subsidizing your kids to go to public.
We had the same difficult transportation issues. We are now getting sleep for the first time in 18 years (well actually our kid started private school at age 2 - so it was 16 years with no sleep.) I wish private school kids could ride the buses too (afterall we all pay for them). |
| Free country, free choice. The public schools are there and available for you. You made another choice. If I was offered a free bus service for my child to attend her private school, I'm not telling you I would not take it. However, coming from Pennsylvania, I can tell you it infuriated me as I paid my own allowance money to ride public transportation to go to public HS swim practice (school had no pool- had to ride across town to a ratty pool with no deep end) to see the buses come through my neighborhood to take kids to non-public schools. |

OP here, Ike Leggett did bring it up before, and it got shot down right away. When you consider the envirnmental and safety benefit, as I mentioned, everyone would be better off. We pay taxes, and it would be nice to get some access to the facility. Homeschooled kisd can use public schools for part of their education, and in some places, use the sports facilities and join the school teams.
All I know is if we all handed our kids to the county to educate, they would be scrambling to find the money to pay for that. Overcrowded classrooms and so on with not one extrat dime to pay for it. |
Puh-leeze - there aren't that many kids going to private where it makes that big a dent on the public school system. If there are statistics, please share them. Besides, is that what guided you to sendingyour child to private? The idea that, 'oh yeah, I'm saving those public school children and families from overcrowding and budget problems. Ahhh, I can sleep well tonight'. Anyway, I know I came on this thread because you said 'public school buses'. I could care less that you send your kid to private but don't act like you're doing me any favors. Self centered person that you are. |
| cos the public buses are transporting within the neighborhood, not clear across town... |
Not so for immersion and other special programs. They could provide "local" service. |
|
This is a good idea.
You are OK with the county demanding that you pay for it, are you not? |
Well, sort of. We are already paying taxes, so I would think that the fee should be minimal. |
| The bus service is already available. You just don't like where the bus stops. |
| I also wonder if kids at private school can get on the public school bus and get out then walk the rest of the way to the private school. There is a private school (parochial) right next door to a the public school in our hamlet. The bus would not have to change route at all. Those same private school kids should be able to get on the buses. |

The County is in crisis mode right now over funding education. Bus service for private schools isn't possibly on their list right now.

Do you think it would be a consideration if money were available? |
