Why can't public school buses be used to transport kids to private schools?

How about letting kids go to whichever public school they want -- for the person who is so worried about the "poor kids".

It is because we, as a society, have seen the benefits of educating our youth and know that it would be utterly dumb to leave poor kids without an education. If you need a breakdown as to why it is best for society overall to have an educated youth population, well, I don't quite have time for all that.

Bravo! 4-star post, PP!!! I read OP's initial post to my husband who shared your view.

But if you look at places like FL, you use it, you pay for it. It is common to see neighborhoods where there are no kids, cuz the community picks up the tab for the buses. We should make public school students pay to use their own buses.

Hernando County, FL:
Are all students allowed to ride the school buses?

All students who live more than two miles from the school that they attend are eligible for transportation. These are the students for which our district receives funds from the State. In addition, we transport many students who live within the two-mile limit of schools. We do not receive funding for these students and they are transported at district expense. We also only use existing school bus stops to transport the students who live within two miles and do no add new stops.

This doesn't appear to be the case in Hernando County, as it also states that those w/in the 2-mile radius are transported at the district's expense. Furthermore, it states, "In addition, we transport many students who live within the two-mile limit of schools. We do not receive funding for these students and they are transported at district expense." Perhaps that's how you defined "community," by confusing it with the district?

So with your comment - making "public school students pay to use their own buses" - you're basically saying that those who can't afford to pay can all go to hell and forfeit their right to an education.

That will really do wonders for our country, PP. Let's just keep the poor down - "cuz" (to use your wording) who really cares about the children in this nation?

This is a good idea. But then don't ask for a bus service. This will be too complicated to arrange

You are OK with the county demanding that you pay for it, are you not?

Well, sort of. We are already paying taxes, so I would think that the fee should be minimal.

But all the different locations, that will be hard to schedule.
How about we get rid of bus transportation for everyone?
