Disorganized help!

Anonymous
I work part time and I have to admit.. I am a very disorganized Mom. I always had a problem with discipline and organization. Now I feel like it’s affecting the rest of the family. The house is always a mess and meals are always unplanned. Help. Any advice. I am so tired and exhausted. It also doesn’t help that my husband is disorganized too

How old are your kids? Can you put them in charge of their own stuff?

3 kids under 10. They help a little but not a lot

3 kids under 10? I could clean almost the whole house besides windows by age 8.

They can pull their covers up and make their bed look nice.
They can throw out trash.
Put all dirty clothes in hamper (even a 2 yr old can do this).
Put clean, folded clothes in drawers.
Put all legos in this box, all dolls in that box, etc.

Each night make a list of what you'll do the next day. Then each morning, attack your list.

For me, on today's list for after work it's:
1. Go food shopping and buy milk, chicken, potatoes, cheese, and vegetables
2. Strip bed, do one load of laundry (this includes folding and putting away).
3. Gather mail and go through it all.
4. Confirm DD is prepared to meet with her teacher tomorrow.

-routine routine routine. Even though it's boring.
Meals are simple but planned so everyone knows what to expect: example:
Sunday roast chicken
Monday soup
Tuesday tacos
Wednesday roasted fish and rice
Thursday breakfast for dinner
Friday pizza

Yes it's boring but you can make your own set up and it'll eliminate the decisions fatigue. Change up the fruit and vegetable side for seasonal etc.
also routines for cleaning, 15-20 min ones every weekday and the. You'll get to the whole house mostly through the week.
Be ruthless with clutter. Mail is sorted immediately and junk tossed, bills put in bill folder/corner designated.

All things Emily Ley helped me get my life together. Most notably her book “a simplified life”. There are tons of helpful tools in there. Her IG and Facebook are also helpful. Start small and build good habits. Use a planner or digital calendar.

There are tons of books out there on being more organized and being a better homemaker. Here is how I would start if everything felt like chaos:
Week 1: Get bed linens together. Everyone should have a comfortable mattress with decent sheets and one warm blanket. Those sheets and blanket stay on that bed and are pulled up over the pillow at night. The thing where everyone has five different blankets pulled from all over the house just leads to feeling like a mess first thing in the morning.
Week 2: meal plan. Pick a day if the week to go grocery shopping or have your groceries delivered from now on. Before you go, write down five things that you might want to have for dinner that week. The pp had good suggestions. Then look up the recipes and ingredients and write them down. Then put down your typical breakfast and lunch foods. Now you have a grocery list, a meal plan, and a grocery day.
Week 3: organize the clutter. My best tip is to hide it. Clean is 90% perception. Get some canvas bins and put them in your playroom. Throw all of the toys inside. Put other stuff in closets, under beds, and out of the way. Now, at least your home appears neat.

There is obviously more to do. Morning and evening routines, laundry, getting kids involved, finding days of reckoning for all of the stuff in your closets, etc. But I think this is a good place to start. If you can sleep well and are well fed, everything else looks a little easier.

OP, have you ever been evaluated for ADHD? I didn’t know I had it until after my kids were born.
