The Maryland Democratic Party called Wednesday for the resignation of Del. Mary Ann Lisanti, the Harford County Democrat who has acknowledged using the n-word to describe a Prince George’s County legislative district.

Let's be fare and reasonable here. What she said was wrong and inexcusable. Not illegal though. Not sure she should resign. A single mistake of this kind (ie, not illegal) may not be enough, depending on how she handles it. Every dumbass comment does not warrant a resignation. Multiple dumbass comments over time are a different story. We Democrats must hold accountable ourselves but must be fair and reasonable in our approach. We can be sure that the Republican tribe would do neither.

We as WHITE people need to educate ourselves about the differences between individual and institutional racism. You may forgive her comments (I don’t), but you need to realize she’s in a position of power where she can implement racist policies. At the very least, how do her black constitutents feel?

Does one stupid comment make someone a racist or sexist? Implementing, supporting or proposing racist policies are different of course.

She called a district in Prince George’s a “n***** district”. It wasn’t like she was rapping along to some lyrics. That’s so incredibly telling and racist.

Can we draw a line between the Small Big Man who has made dozens of racist and sexist statements over decades and one Maryland legislator who so far has made one "dumbass" comment? It actually is a pretty easy line to draw. The video of the Small Big Man resonated more because of everything else he has said and done.

Only a racist person would say a predominantly African-American neighborhood is a "“n***** district.”

That's not a simple slip of the tongue. That's not an unfortunate restating of a quote or a music lyric.

That's straight up deeply ingrained racism. This is a fundamental element of Ms. Lisanti's views of racial minorities. How can she appropriately represent the people of color in her district if she's already prejudged them so harshly?

She cannot effectively lead.
