Should we get rid of these toys? Or hold onto them if we have a girl?

I know this will start a debate. But please try to offer advice.

I have two boys age 3.5 and 2 years. When my first was a baby, I bought a beautiful wooden dollhouse with furniture off a list serve. I also bought a nice kitchen. I figured, “pizza rolls not gender roles!”

Well, the kitchen and dollhouse are completely ignored. I try to set it up and guide them to play, but they never do. They are never used. I thought they’d use the kitchen, at least!

Should I sell them? I’d imagine I could get $200 for both. They are nice, wooden, like new. And that’s a lot of money.

We’d like more children, but even if we have a girl I assume we could get a kitchen as a gift or from one of our nieces.

Anyone been there?

My son became OBSESSED with his kitchen a 2.5. Your 2 yo may change his mind, I wouldn't get rid of it yet.

If your having another, and storage isn't a big problem for you, I'd keep it to see if they like it. Doesn't matter if the next kid is a boy or a girl, it's just going to be a matter of their personal preference. My DS has gotten a ton of use out of his play kitchen and Calico Critters stuff. He also likes Legos and anything vehicle related. You never know what an individual kid will take to!

OP here and I forgot an important point.

We are moving into a smaller space. We’ll have room for them, but I’m also trying to minimalism and simplify our lives.

And the extra $$$$ would be nice.

This *question* has nothing to do with your kids’ genders and everything to do with the fact that your kids don’t like these toys. As you said, if you have a kid who likes these kinds of toys, you can always get another one(s). I’d get rid of them since you’re not using them and they take up space, and get rid of your “my boys are among the few who don’t like play kitchens, so now I believe in innate sex differences” justification to strangers while you’re at it.

I'd get rid of it. If your third child turns out to like that stuff, you can buy a nice new one with that $200 you got from the sale.

I would keep them for the kids you have.nmine would have used it as a garage for his cars and trucks at age4

So really, what’s your question?

If getting rid of them would be a huge mistake.

Only you can decide that. Your children may learn to love them, they may not. You seem to think having a girl may change that. Why do you think haveing a girl changes the value of a wooden kitchen?

Because when my nieces come over they love the house and kitchen.

I should just be asking if you got rid of a big ticket item and later regretted it.

I have two girls. When they got to ages 7 and 4 we got rid of the huge dollhouse handed down to them by another family because neither played with it. Play kitchen was played with a ton and still is by the 4yo with her girl and boy friends.

Your kids are still too young for you to decide that they're never going to play with either thing. But if you need the space or the money, it's simple to get rid of both and offer smaller, inexpensive alternatives. They're both still so young that either could start playing with a dollhouse or kitchen at preschool and then suddenly love having that kind of stuff to play with at home (but within reason space-wise and cost-wise).

Male and female baby monkeys have gendered toy preferences
