| We are thinking about moving to this school district and we're wondering how are the teachers, academics, and student body. Is there much enrichment too? TIA |
| OP, Jones Lane is a great school! Both of my kids went there, and though some aren't crazy about the principal and some of the rankings aren't amazing(GS is a 6 I think) we loved the school! The Great Schools ranking is low because the low-income students don't do very well on the standardized tests but that is more of a reflection of the students in one neighborhood not the majority of the school. The neighborhoods are great and the majority of kids live off Jones Lane or QO road. The area is ideal IMO. Most are happy with the school. Both DCs had a great experience and thrived while they attended. Neither of my kids are at the elementary school now but let me know if you have any specific questions about the area/neighborhoods or middle/high school! Good luck! |
| Jones lane girls are always the most popular girls |
| PP here, just wanted to add that both kids had great teachers every single year and the other families in the area are great, our kids are still friends with the kids they met during their elementary school years, and there tends to be a couple youth basketball and soccer teams full of kids from the neighborhoods. |
OP here, in terms of the feeder middle school, ridgeview. Do your kids attend that school? If so, how is it in terms of enrichment and were your children bored there or adequately challenged. Thanks! |
PP here, Ridgeview was a great environment for our kids, and though people don't regard it very highly compared to Lakelands Park it is definitely still a good school. Socially both of our kids had great experiences, but academically I don't think it is as challenging as it should be but that goes for all MCPS middle schools and this is something lacking countywide. If you are greatly concerned about this there is always Mary of Nazareth(the local Catholic school). But, neither of our kids was in the "advanced" math which few kids are in, and that math class was considered rigorous. I would say that they seemed bored sometimes especially in classes like science and English but again this isn't an issue unique to Ridgeview. From both DC's experiences, Ridgeview and QO classes differ extremely as Ridgeview really only has one level of most classes per grade so your kids may have some distracting kids/unfocused students, unlike QO which offers tons of APs and Honors classes and people are all in different levels, so in the higher level courses everyone is academically focused and ready to learn. DC #1 is at QO and has been very challenged so far as there are so many options for how rigorous your kid wants their course load to be, something he didn't really have at Ridgeview. I would still recommend the schools though. Hope this was helpful! |
| My DC is in studying there..Academically, I feel that they are behind. Maybe this is a county wide issue..Other than that, my DC loves school. Can't say its diverse though - majority Caucasian. The neighborhoods are very nice,a lot of older homes.. |
Ridgeview is a fine school, but varies student to student. My son was on the advanced math track and started Spanish 1A/B in 6th grade. He enjoyed attending Ridgeview, although was not adequately challenged in most classes. Although, I will say that there were many electives as the students got older, which was something that my son enjoyed. On the other hand, my daughter also attended Ridgeview, was not on the advanced math track and was appropriately challenged throughout her three years there. The teachers there can be mixed, but both my children liked the vast majority of their teachers and had some absolutely phenomenal ones that they loved. All in all, Ridgeview is a fine school and so is Jones Lane. You should have no worries moving to the area. |
| My children go to Jones Lane and I do not feel they are academically behind at all. If anything they are ahead. We have friends at other MoCo schools and they are learning the same thing as my children. We highly recommend this area. The school is good, the teachers are wonderful, and honestly nothing beats the neighborhood. There is so much support and camaraderie. The school has diversity, which I view that as a wonderful thing. Parents are very involved. Enrichment-wise, there are after school coding classes through Panda Programming, art and a boat load of other opportunities, both academic and extra-curricular. Our community and neighborhood is so tight-knit that you would be hard pressed to find another one as unique as this one. |
| I attended Jones Lane when it first opened in the late 80's. Truly loved that school and the neighborhood. My best friends today are still from Jones Lane. I currently work for MCPS and the school still has a pretty good reputation. I don't think you can go wrong there. |
49% white 23% hispanic 10% black 12% asian 5% two or more races Pretty diverse in my opinion. |

To the PP who said the low income kids score low. Do you have data to support this?
In my experience as an administrator, I've seen some of the highest scores from the lower income kids and many average / low scores from the higher income kids. I can't produce a spreadsheet for you today, sadly so you'll just have to take my word on it. |
| My sister’s family lives in Potomac Chase and her kids go to Jones Lane. My sister seems overall happy with it. She has said it does not seem as high pressure of an environment as some other schools in MoCo. Her neighborhood is very nice and most of the kids go to Jones Lane. There is a very active women’s club that she is a part of, and it seems like the parents of kids in her neighborhood that go to the school are very actively involved. From what I’ve seen though the neighborhood does have a busybody feel to it, where all of the moms are a bit cliquey and gossipy, and where everyone is in your business. |
+1 |
But really that’s not much different than most other neighborhoods in Montgomery County. ? |
