My 13 year old was a mess last night-crying, arguing, yelling, falling apart over anything and everything. He is a usually mellow guy with a little anxiety here and there. Turns out he grew almost a half inch over night. I know because during a sane moment he asked me to measure him because he was asked how tall he is by a girl. I thought he was getting sick or something really upsetting happened at school. I asked him if he had not slept well the night before and he said he got plenty of sleep. I didn't know who he was last night and I have seen plenty of puberty mood swings, just not to this degree. This morning his taller self was calm, cool and collected.
Have you seen this happen? I know they can grow overnight, but the whole temporary insanity the night before growing? |
| My kids are younger but one does it too. It’s weird but at least there is kinda a reason. |
| My 13 yr old DS grows overnight. I am sure of it. He sleeps like the dead for a day or two like you do when you are sick except he isn't sick. He loses his mind occasionally too like going on and on about something trivial. He also eats like a horse. He often wakes up to eat in the middle of the night too. |
OP here-DS said he got up in the middle night last night to get some food. He never does that! |
True-it's a relief to know there is a reason. I was so worried I barely slept last night. He has never been this extreme. |

Oh man, I just wish I had your problem.
My 13 year old son is not growing, not eating, he's at the second percentile for height, and his pediatrician is worried. If I could know he was going to grow half an inch overnight (never thought that was possible!), I would positively welcome a series of tantrums. |
I am so sorry to hear that. Is it sudden or has his growth always been this way? Is he restricting? I know boys can develop EDs too. I wish there was something I could say or do! |
19:57 here. My son is in the 5th percentile for height and weight but his dad and I am pretty short. He didn't start with this crazy hunger until right around when he turned 13. He takes meds for ADHD and he is usually hungry when they wear off. But hungry for him means a bowl of cereal. Now he can eat half a box of cereal a day. Has your son always been small? Mine has. |
He used to be between 15th and 20th percentile, but now it's dropped to 2nd. He does take ADHD meds, but even without meds, I've got the feeling he doesn't have a great appetite. His much younger sibling eats more than he does sometimes! Bone scan shows normal age, which is a bummer. Thank you for your concern, though, and above PP as well. |
| Yes! We I have the same thing happened during developmental times. Only with my girl. |
This is my DS. he's 16yrs old, also ADHD. I posted about this a while ago - got some not so kind responses. He took meds from age 7-14, and I think it completely destroyed his appetite. He used to eat a lot when the meds would wear off, but he hasn't been on meds for two years - and no longer eats a lot, period. The pediatrician was concerned about his growth, so we took a bone age test to see if he still had more growing to do. Sadly, he's done growing

| BTW, everyone "grows" overnight.... gravity shrinks you throughout the day. |
| When my daughter has had a mental leap, she seems to go backwards physically. When she's physically grown, she's seemed stupid. |
| My son grew 8 inches in one year. He was so cranky and hungry 24-7. |
| Omg, my 12 year old was a mess tonight and then laid down and fell asleep. He never does this. I thought for sure he was sick. But he woke up an hour later fine. I am going to look at his pants tomorrow and see if they seem shorter all the sudden. |
