| I respectfully disagree that he grew half an inch overnight. Seems impossible. |
agree. There is usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch shrinkage of height by end of the day due to compression of the spaces between your joints throughout the day. So to get an accurate differential, measure in the mornings only. If you compare an evening with a morning reading, you will see false growth! |

OP, yes, my children went through this.
Remember when they were babies? Especially if they were breastfed and gowing through a growth spurt, how hungry they were, and irritable, and they would cry and cry to nurse and your body wasn't making enough so they would wake up every couple of hours all night long.... It's just like that. (If you formula fed it would have been easier to give them more when they wanted it). Now they are 13 and growing like weeds and it happens over the course of 3 days, again. They are HUNGRY!!!!! I suggest making a high calorie milkshake for him every night for a week. Lots of fat and protein. |
OP's kid is probably going through a growth spurt, but not one that creates a 1/2 growth literally overnight. This is the reason for that 1/2 inch: http://bedtimemath.org/fun-math-growing-overnight/ |
Or is it....? Apparently it is possible https://www.emory.edu/EMORY_REPORT/erarchive/1999/March/ermarch.1/3_1_99lampl.html |
Extreme exhaustion can cause these symptoms too. |
