| Would you prefer your late teen drink or not drink but use weed like once a weekend? I drank in high school and college so that’s what I’m more familiar with and seems more “normal” to. ( not withstanding that they shouldn’t do either in a perfect world). My son says there are a lot of kids that don’t drink but do smoke. I find this really interesting and a cultural shift. Curious what other parents think about this. |
This is misleading because there hasn’t been much studied about marijuana. Not like alcohol. And what we do know of frequent marijiana use for teens is that it can have lifelong consequences. Including schizophrenia. Do what you want after 21. Teens shouldn’t be doing either. |
| I would rather my kids drank vs smoke weed. |
Why? |
|
Weeds effects on the brain are long-lasting.
Alcohol causes more temporary impulsiveness, risky behavior. I would be more worried about weed f@cking up kid’s brain permanently like so many stoners I knew growing up—and have seen as older adults as well. |
There’s been a rise in schizophrenia. Wonder if it’s related to increased weed usage. |
|
I am also more comfortable with alcohol because I’m more familiar with it, but alcohol is certainly tied to much more risky behaviors (sexual assault, drunk driving, etc.). I read this recently and thought it was interesting:
https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/17/upshot/alcohol-or-marijuana-a-pediatrician-faces-the-question.amp.html I do worry about the long term brain effects of weed. |
|
Drink socially = ok.
Weed makes you stupid so not a fan. |
| Binge drinking also causes significant brain issues which is what teens do |
| Why would you think you had a choice? I think more kids are likely to do both or neither. |
|
I'm not sure there is a shift, in the 80's people were drinking and smoking pot.
I don't care which they do if they don't do it more than once a week. Kids know they can't get away with drinking during school but some think they can get high before school and that is a huge problem. Also, kids know you can't drink and drive but they don't know you can't smoke and drive. |
Alcohol has long lasting effects on the brain as well, particularly when a lot of binge drinking is involved. It’s not fair to say that every effect of alcohol is just a fleeting and gone by the time it’s out of your system, that’s just simply not true. Look at lifelong alcoholics and you will see that there is absolutely an impact on their brain function. |
We are not talking about life long alcoholics. We are talking about teens partying on the weekends. Which affects their brain more weed or alcohol and clearly it is weed. |

‘Would you like your soup with one cockroach floating in it or two?’
Ask yourself why you have given up and are asking this question instead of demanding something better. |
