Tell me about Ohio State!

This my sons top school. Tell me your experience. Thank you.

I think you mean THE Ohio State University.
What does he like about it?
It's a pretty standard midwestern flagship state school. I can't think of any reason someone not from Ohio would want to go there, but I can't think of anything terrible about it either.

It's big. Your son has to be capable of advocating for himself and carving out his own niche, or he will totally get lost in the shuffle.

It's also cold.

However, Columbus is an awesome college town.

Just a big mediocre-minus state school.

No it’s not.

Why do you feel a need to comment. Does it make you feel better about yourself. OP told you DC was interested. Unless you have something constructive or personal experience, nobody cares what you think.

Right...

Among the highlights: Our 2018 Columbus campus freshman class is the best-prepared and most diverse class in university history, with a record-high average ACT composite score of 29.3. Sixty-four percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes,

The Good:
They have great athletic facilities, nice dorms (even for freshman) and have fantastic libraries and student union. The campus is not that hilly so it is pretty walkable and nothing seems too far. It reminds me a bit of UMCP campus though with a lot of cars driving around the campus. The one thing that is nice is the urban feeling. Lots to see and do off the campus. The weather is really not that much different from here except some more colder and snowier days. All freshman get iPads Pros and all of their textbooks are dowloaded. I think they are in their 3rd year and the kids love it. They keep them when they graduate. They also have free tech service. They have good health facilities

The Bad:
Bus service is just okay. They don't have free bus service in and around Columbus. Schools like Pitt and Case do.
The school is huge and there is a huge emphasis placed on sports. I mean the school spirit is great, but sometimes it is a tad bit annoying.
They do not have a sliding scale for merit awards, so you have to wait to be accepted and then wait another 3-4 weeks to see if you get any merit/financial aid. A lot of OOS like Alabama, Kansas, Arizona, Minnesota, etc... show you X ACT and X GPA gets you X amount of merit. It makes applying to those schools cost effective.
They also have the worst admissions office I have ever dealt with. EA is by Nov 1st, but they roll out admissions at random times so a friend could get in by mid November but it is Jan 31st and you are still waiting to hear - even if you applied earlier. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Kids with lesser stats getting in earlier etc... This also decreases your decision on getting scholarships.
Some areas do not seem that strong and you very much feel like a number. We went to the engineering info session and tour and it was led by two 5th year students. Neither of whom were graduating the next year and both switched majors. It was just bleh.

My daughter has two friends there now. One likes it, doesn't love it - and the other is just okay, but likes their school. The admits and deferrals are all over the place. Again no rhyme or reason. The only noticeable difference is they like high weighted GPA's and will forgo lower ACT for it. We had one get in with a 4.2 weighted 27 ACT and another deferred 3.9 weighted and 32 ACT.

It is definitely a party school but not all greek. Tons of clubs and activities.

Oh yes, they are huge on class ranks because Ohio ranks their students.

What's wrong with that?

If your child is a particularly strong student -- based on GPA and test scores -- they should apply for the honors program.

Students with high stats also usually get merit aid.

Regardless it pays off to apply by the Nov 1 EA deadline. They flat out tell you during the info session that if you are at all serious to meet that deadline.

It is huge and they can't spend much time on each application, so stats are more important than essays and recommendations than it would be at a smaller school with holistic admissions.

In-state families feel the university has become much more difficult to get into for them, largely because of international and out of state (higher paying) applicants

Not every school district or private school in Ohio ranks their students. It varies, just like in any other region.

It is a lot tougher to get into these days. My DC friend was deferred with a 3.8 UW GPA and 1480 SAT. She was ahead of the Navience numbers, but the counselor said all of the flagship schools are getting harder each year. She was accepted into schools that are much better so she withdrew her application.

But let that be a lesson. It is not easy to get into always.
