Tell me about Ohio State!

Oh, how I hate Ohio State!

Generally speaking, any major university like this is a better option for graduate students than undergraduates, who will largely sit in lecture halls taught by TAs.

TA's do not teach any classes at Ohio State. They do help at the smaller learning/guidance gatherings, but all lectures are taught by professors.

Not many people have actually answered your question OP. I will try. I'm from OH (Cincy) and my sister and niece went to OSU. They loved it. They have a very active alumni network thanks to their football team.

Columbus is only about a 6 hour drive away from the DMV. Columbus is a growing city that actually has job openings. We have noticed a lot more kids from the DMV going there. Your son might want to ask the local alumni network here to meet with some folks who went there to see how they liked it.

Good luck.

I graduated about a decade ago, but loved my experience there! I always say I had the quintessential college experience. It's huge, but anyone can find their niche. Great college town, tons of events going on all the time with high profile celebrities and others visiting/performing, fun football games, and good academics and study abroad options if he's into that. I did NOT however, like my freshman dorms (honor dorms but somehow tinier rooms and no AC). I know they've made lots of improvements since my time. He's going to LOVE it!

If you drive fast and start by leaving from Gaithersburg :-§

We live in the heart of DC (Georgetown) and it takes us 6 hours to drive to Columbus. We do it frequently to see family.

I went to Ohio State. It was a great school for me. I am from Ohio and was a very good student who could not afford anything more than in state options. They gave me considerable money and I was in the honors program. My biggest advantage in life is that I have really great executive function skills, so navigating a big school was an advantage for me. I would make sure this is the case for your child. Otherwise, do not go to OSU. It is huge and you can easily get lost in the shuffle. Literally no one cares if you go to classes. Ever. My freshman roommate failed out because she skipped every class.

Also - Columbus is a great town. Tons of stuff to do, lots of cool restaurants and galleries, super friendly people. The focus on football is weird and all encompassing.

I am in Rockville and have gotten there in 5.5 hours Posted speed limits of 70mph and going 80 mph instead helps The only tough part of the drive is around Cumberland as it is very curvy.

But most of the time it is 6-6.5 hours with a break for gas/meal. Not bad at all and much better than any option up and down 95 which is completely unpredictable.

Said someone with a mediocre-minus personality.

I don't know if this has changed. It was not easy for students 20 years ago to finish undergraduate in 4 years - because of the registration process and the scheduling of certain classes. I went to law school at Ohio State, so my perception may be incorrect. My classmates who were not in an honors program had to do an extra semester or summer term to get their bachelors.

It seems like this has not changed unfortunately.

A few other PP’s have had good points. It’s HUGE. Yes, it can still be difficult to get into your classes so you graduate in 4 years. Some majors are worse for this than others (nursing and engineering seemed to be particularly bad). Tons of school spirit. Athletics are important. Greek life not so big but students definitely have a good time outside the Greek system. Columbus is a nice and growing - new stuff is being built in the area all the time. OSU has a big and loyal alumni network in just about every city in the US; OSU alums have a pretty big presence in DC as well as in Chicago, so if your child wants to end up in either of those cities he/she will have plenty of company.
