Churchhill vs. RM IB program

Anonymous
We live in the Churchhill cluster and are pretty happy with our home school. Yesterday my kid was accepted into the RM IB program. She is a motivated kid with good writing and time-management skills. She hates math. However, I gradually become hesitated to send her to IB as I read many posts stating how cruel the program is. Actually RMIB does not have better college acceptance of ~top 20 colleges as compared to churchhill.

The admission to IB is selective (100 out of 900 applicants). So I suppose IB kids should perform better. How come the college acceptance is equal or worse? Should I keep her in churchhill?

Yes, keep her at Churchill. Leave the spot open to someone who really wants to attend.

I'm also not really sure about your math skills regarding the top 20 college acceptance rate between RMIB and Churchill.

You could send her because it is one of the very best and most rigorous high school experiences in the area. She will be more than prepared for the toughest college courses. But it is a lot of work. It is only as cruel as your expectations of your child... if you treat the experience as a time for her to learn instead of a time to compete. If you love your home school, great.

It’s because academics are not the only college admission criteria. Legacy, sports, EC ...

RM IB. No brainer.

1.RMIB is not cruel but it’s soul sucking hard. But great group of smart driven kids and great teachers.

2. You can’t tell IB vs Churchill college admission comparison from that table (only RM vs Churchill). If your only goal is big name college acceptance, do NOT send your kid to IB.

Beyond any judgement on my intention by saying top 20. I am curious why IB kids did not perform better than those who stayed in churchhill regarding to the 2018 college admission? Is my conclusion right?

No your conclusion is wrong.

No.

As someone pointed, the chart shows you RMHS stats, not RMIB stats. But, let's say for argument sake, that the entire stats is for RMIB.

RMIB has 100 students per grade - so senior class = 100
Churchill has about 500 seniors

Let's say 5 per each school got into x university.

RM = 5/100 = 5%
Churchill = 5/500 = 1%

5% is a better rate than 1%.

Now, let's look at RMHS as a whole. It has about a 20% FARMS rate, while Churchill has a < 5% FARMS rate. So, even if you look at RMHS as a whole, that table of college acceptance rate is pretty darn good for RMHS compared to WCHS.

If you think your child is going to do extremely well (say, top few) at Churchill, there is no point going to RMIB. But if she really hates math (which makes it a bit hard to become really the top at the local HS), going to RM and getting the IB diploma would probably be quite useful for her college application.

Because many families neither qualify for need-based aid, nor can pay full price at an elite school. Top 20 schools do not award merit aid - only financial aid.

That's why so many Blair SMAC and RMIB kids to go UMD-CP.

Re. Math... a lot of IB kids take Ap calc bc as a junior. People sometimes under estimate level of math and science classes in IB program.

To compare rates, we have to make equal denominators, e.g. compare those with same SAT scores, EC, leadership etc. They will apply for the same X university. We have to make two assumptions (1) the 100 RMIB kids from all over the county have better profiles than(or equal) those top 100 at churchhill since churchhill students participate magnet test as well. (2) all these 200 target for the same x university. RM kids and other 400 at churchhill is a confoundig factor. for a fair comparision, compare similar students.

Thanks!! Could she avoid hard math courses at RMIB?
