lottery proximity preferecne

We have 'proximity ' preference at a local school. I noticed that for our IB school is lists this 'IB' status on the lottery application... should the proximity preference show up as well?

It shows up on mine ...

You probably don't really have the proximity that you thought you did. Are you sure you read the requirements completely?

OP here- IB school: Distance from home: 0.69 miles

School I am hoping for proximity at: Distance from home: 0.38 miles

Should this qualify?
Thanks!

Is the school you're hoping for proximity at a charter school? Or a DCPS neighborhood school? I think most charter schools don't recognize proximity preference.

Is it a charter?

OP- not a charter

Is it a boundary school--i.e., are other people in-bounds for it? Or is it a city-wide school like Capitol Hill Montessori that has no "in bounds" students?

Based on the definition at myschoolDC.org, yes:

Proximity preference
Students who live greater than a half mile walking distance from their zoned DCPS elementary school will receive a proximity preference in the lottery to a DCPS zoned elementary school that is a half mile or less walking distance from their home. The application will automatically populate this preference based on the guardian's home address provided on the application.

Or, e.g., SWS.

You may not have proximity preference. I tried to argue that we had proximity preference at a DCPS school because of Google maps saying we were 0.5 miles away. However, we must have been 50 to 100 feet walking distance over the half mile the way that their computer system measured. I think I also was told on the phone that they measured front door of your house to front door of the school which may add distance.

It is walking distance based on DC’s mapping sustem that includes where sidewalks are. It will show up on the application if you select the school and you have it. Try also find.myschooldc.org

Thank you. I guess the reasons that I am confused is that based on the distance listed in the lottery system, we should have preference, but it is not listed. I confirmed with the lottery folks that it should be listed if we get it. It seems inconsistent that the system would use a different way of calculating it than what they are posting when you rank your schools in the lottery. Oh well... And yes, they are both regular neighborhood schools.

Sorry, OP. That's enormously frustrating. I'd try to work with the myschool admins to appeal it if you think there's a mistake (and you want the proximate school instead).

We also didn’t get it for our PK lottery application. We live on the Hill and are IB for Peabody, which is more than 0.5 miles from our house (according to MyschoolDC). We are less than 0.5 miles from both Maury and Brent but no proximity preference appears. (Not that we would get into Maury or Brent OOB but that’s a separate matter.)
