Sensory kid having issues with school uniform

Anonymous
DD is in kindergarten and goes to a small K-8 private school. Every morning is a huge battle because she doesn’t like wearing socks with shoes, which are required. She has to wear navy socks with white shoes. Otherwise, she loves the school.

It is mostly the socks she has an issue with. I’ve spent a small fortune on socks and can’t find anything she likes, including sensory friendly socks from Amazon.

Should I go ahead an ask for an accommodation by the school (for her to wear no socks)? Or any other ideas? She is fine when she gets to school and has the socks on, but the mornings are killing us trying to get her to put on her socks and shoes.

I would not agree to no socks but if you find a brand/kind she likes maybe do that and start to transition. Can you bring her to school and put the socks on in there.

Are there socks she likes? If yes, dye them navy.

Can you wait until in the car/on the bus/just arriving at school to put socks on?

Does she bathe at night? If so try putting school socks on with pjs at night so you don’t have a struggle in the morning. That worked for our DD with similar issues.

Can you cut the foot of the sock off and put it around her ankle so it looks like she's wearing socks but in the shoe there is no sock?

This is a power and control issue, not a sensory issue. Your daughter is old enough to put on her own socks. Hand them to her. It's her responsibility to have socks on her feet when she gets to school. Since she likes school and wants to go, they have to be on her feet.

It's a typical age 5 issue if she's fine in school. Sensory issues do not stop at home.

Meant to say, sensory issues do not stop at school.

My DS is 10. We found the SmartKnit sensory socks to be too tight, but the ones for SMOs (orthotics) were perfect. Also, no heel means that they are easy to put on. They are expensive but worth it. Really last a long time, too.

Also, if you think the school will let you get an accommodation I don't see any harm in trying. But in the long run it will probably be worthwhile for her to tolerate socks (though she may just get more flexible as she gets older).

Does she have any non navy socks she will wear? Or does she never wear socks? How has she gone 5 years without socks?

Ignorant comments here.
Anyway, have you tried seamless tights?
