Less expensive alternative to a minivan?

We have one Toyota Sienna, and we need a new second car that seats 6. Any thoughts?

Those that seat six aren’t usually cheaper than minivans.

A used minivan. Seriously, there is nothing cheaper than a minivan.

Mazda 5. Love mine. Seats 6, sliding doors in back, not a behemoth to drive and park.

If you are regularly going to have all 6 seats filled, really look at how much trunk space it leaves you (i.e., practically none). We have 2 kids and wanted occasional seating for friends. If I had 3 or 4 kids, the Mazda 5 might not work because there is not much space left over for sports stuff, chairs, etc.

I would just keep your Sienna going. Thats the best way to save money on your next car purchase...delay it as long as safely possible. And with a Toyota that can be a long long while. Just pay to fix what's needed and keep it on the road.

Retired Uhaul box truck.

$4-5,000 on average.

That's what we've been doing, but now we're faced with $2k+ in repairs for a van that is 10+ years old and has 230k+ miles.

A brand new base model Sienna is $35k, and a used one is not much cheaper.

OP is not getting rid of the Sienna. She said she needs a new 2nd car. Reading is fundamental.
