Woodmore Elementary

Anonymous
Does anyone have experience with this school? We are considering a move to PG county and may look at some of the new constructions in the Fairwood neighborhood. It appears that these homes are zoned for Woodmore Elementary.

Would you say that this is a good school? If you had children that attended (or currently attend), do they like it?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Honestly, unless you can afford private, stay far, far away from PG County. Seriously and I am a PG County parent. Sad but true.

We are willing to do private, but wanted to check out the public school options before making that decision.

PP: the problem is class sizes. Especially in Upper Marlboro and. Woke. They’re steady building so that’s more families and not enough schools.

Looking at the enrollment data, Woodmore is at 77% capacity, and has 66 kindergarten students. Their website says 3 K teachers so that would be 22 K students per class. Some schools in PGCPS are horribly overcrowded but most (not all) ES in the Bowie area are below capacity.

Unfortunately, no fulltime assistant teachers. It’s one thing to have 22 4th graders but 22 kindergarten students without a second assistant is a lot.

Yes it is a lot but that is where public school is in the US.

In my experience in PGCPS, there is usually another adult in the room in a K class. Between reading specialists, math specialists, ESOL teachers, Special Education educators and teachers aides the teacher has help a large part of the day.

I know that many, many private schools have K classes with more than 22 students per K class with no full time aide.

Prince George’s County = Nouveau Riche

The tax dollars do not go to the schools it’s evident

If you can afford go private, it’ll benefit your child culturally in the long run

Not any private I ever toured and I have toured pretty much most of them in the area. DC, Maryland and Virginia. Never saw a K class with 22 or more kids and no assistant.

This! +1000! Especially if you find one with a little more “flavor”. Meaning not just AA

Woodmore is a good school with a dedicated Principal. The outside is nothing to brag about but like all schools it’s the inside that counts.

For MCPS it would be on the small side.

My chlld attended Woodmore for 4th and 5th grade after we moved from DC. Woodmore is a good school, parents care about the success of their children and most of the teachers were dedicated and talented. I received many negative comments from parents sending their children to private schools when I asked parents I'd meet at sporting events about Woodmore, but none of them had any real information. Visit the school, talk with the Principal and make your own judgment.

This. Both of my kids attend and I'm happy. The principal is very accessible and I've been pleased with my kids' teachers so far. I suggest you do a tour.

Posts like these are designed simply to trash the county so that others (MoCo folks) can keep their housing prices high. Don't believe this OP. Its a straight up lie.
