New to the county and toured a number of private schools for my 1st grader. However, I'm noticing they all have a public school feel. I am in Upper Marlboro. Any suggestions or did I visit at the wrong times. I visited:
Riverdale Grace Brethren Reid Temple Woodstream Rock Creek I did not like any of those. |
| What do you mean by public school feel? Class size? Parents? Teachers? Kids? |
| Class size and atmosphere. For example, one school had 24 1st graders with no assistant. Another school was very chaotic. Just reminded me of public |

Depending on where you’re working, some of the Anne Arundel County private’s might be a viable option. St Andrew’s in Edgewater or any of the Annapolis area ones (Key, Severn, and Indian Creek are the priciest and there are also several religious schools)
I know one of the Annapolis Montessori schools has a shuttle from Bowie. Also, Seatch threads here for info about Holy Trinity. |
| Our Savior Lutheran school in Arlington used to offer a bus from Andrews AFB. They might still offer it. Small school, nice community. |
| Thank you everyone. I plan to tour Indian creek and Severn |
| You aren’t going to get 12 kids per class and the private school feel at a school that charges $10k a year for tuition. Good luck. |
| St Pius in Bowie is having an open house soon |
| Take a look at Friends Community School |
I didn't say $10K was my maximum. I said the schools I visited. I can afford more if I so choose. |
At no point did I mention what I thought you could pay, because I don't know that information. The information that I had from your post is the schools you visited are around the $10k price point (and I know this because I have either visited the schools you listed or know several people with children at those schools), and I responded accordingly. You will not get what you seem to be looking for in that range. I added the good luck because the hoops you have to jump through to get your child a decent education in this county is ridiculous. |
PS - you did not visit at the wrong time. I have some good friends that just pulled their children from Woodstream, and one of the reasons was due to how chaotic the environment was. Another reason was class size. My son went to Reid for a short time- they are extremely punitive. I know several people that toured Reid and were taken aback at their discipline policies. They are also very focused on teaching the kids above grade level, without actually teaching the basics first. It is known that the kids have some gaps in their education. They do have some decent placements in high schools. As a former Reid parent, I suggest that at ANY school you choose, you stick around for pick up. You can get a better idea of the parents of the children your children will go to school with. I was taken aback at the mom with the tattoos on her face. Your best option in that range is HT, but I think their class sizes are a bit large. They went through some growing pains a few years ago (and a lot of families left for Key), but have settled back down. |
Apologies, I miss understood. And you are right, these hoops are crazy. Just trying to figure this mess out. |
Thank you for your feedback. I don't really have a price range. I was just checking things nearby. I actually just toured The Severn School today. A bit further but I loved the atmosphere. I like private tours because they don't have a chance to make everything all pretty. Open Houses they seem to put their best foot forward. I have heard good things about Key as well. |
Tattoos on the face!!! WOWSERS. Well I have 18 tattoos, although none are visible when I go to work. |
