My daughter is 8, I am searching for an agency just to see if these talents she has can get her a good college savings plan. If you know of any good real reputable ones in the DMV please list. Thanks

So my sister in law did this in Philly and she even admitted it was a terrible idea. They had some good "gigs" for Zulily but they look about 6-8 hours and most of the gigs were just free clothes. And this was a prized gig. She said its so so boring for the kids, there's nothing to do, you can't leave the building, it hurts when they do their hair, etc etc. She had one Macys add that ran a few times and even that was only 1400.00. Just totally not worth the time. She said if she was honest it was well below min wage if she counted all the hours driving and doing her book.

Do you have any idea how poorly those jobs pay?

I also vote no--- my DD is an actor and some of her friends have joined agencies and gotten some work. But, it's not worth it for the most part. They don't earn that much money and any money they earn is doing gigs that occur during school, meaning your academics suffer - so it won't help your college plan.

Don't put the money in a college savings plan. Open a Roth IRA. Any earned income qualifies no matter the age, and imagine how that's going to appreciate if you start at 10 yo. If desperate, you can withdraw funds from a Roth for college without paying a penalty. Also, the Roth does not count against financial aid (if you need it).

My DS did modeling for a clothing line for a few years but not in the DC area. It's hard work, no doubt about it. Since we move to the DC area, I haven't looked into it here. He has sports and other activities that he enjoys doing and there is no way he could do sports and modeling at the same time. He never took weekday jobs and that limited him. I knew some kids who would miss one day a week of school for gigs. INSANE.

He did make decent enough money and has a nice little bank account now. I limited it to jobs that were within a certain distance from our house and most gigs lasted 3-4 hours. He played with the other kids and on his tablet when waiting for his turn.

There were things I liked about it. He had to focus and not whine if he was uncomfortable, which he was because he did winter clothes in the summer and summer clothes in the winter and warehouses aren't the most climate controlled. There was a whole crew there and he had to do his job so they could do theirs. He had to maintain his composure. All and all, good life skills.

That said, he's a boy. He fit into the sample sizes with no worries and I never thought twice about his weight or looks. It is different with girls. I don't know if I would have done it if he was a girl.
