BASIS and Latin 1st day of School?

Anonymous
Hello:

My rising 5th grader will be applying for BASIS and Latin this year. I see DCPS is likely to start on August 26, a week later than usual. Do Latin and BASIS follow the DCPS calendar?

I'm trying to lock in summer plans (and don't know if my oldest child will still be with DCPS, or at one of these two charters). Do I need to plan on being in town the week of August 20th "just in case"?

Thanks!

BASIS set its own calendar for several years, although it aligned to DCPS for 18-19.

The calendar for 2019-20 hasn't been released yet.

If I were guessing, I would suspect BASIS will start one week before DCPS. But that's just a guess.

Hopefully your child will get into Latin.

Thanks. I know the odds, and don’t need your snark. (Even if chances are low, I’m not looking to spend a fortune on a vacation the week of Aug 20 if my oldest child may be in school then. But for a range of reasons, that’s the best week for us to go away, if there’s no school.)

I'd call both schools and ask whether there are orientation activities the week before school starts (whenever that is).

BASIS usually has an event during that week for parents and students to come by and get locks for lockers, their schedules and learn about extracurriculars. It's optional (if you don't go the logistics will be handled on the first day) but can be a good way to help kids acclimate.

As for the first day, I would imagine both schools will hold off on their calendar announcements until DCPS finalizes the rest of its calendar.

I'm curious, are you pro Latin, anti BASIS or both?

I went to Latin ready and wanting to love it and I was so underwhelmed and kind of unimpressed. BASIS seems intense, but at least offered some more impressive academics.
Physical space aside, Latin wins hands down at that one.

OMG do we need to do the Latin vs. BASIS debate again?

Latin is Aug 22

OP - did you find anything more on the starting date of Basis?

Thanks!

Basis does have several weeks of orientation for incoming 5th graders. My now-5th grader missed that because we were away and did fine, and he's not the most together kid. So the orientation week is nice but optional, unless you think your child is particularly anxious or would need extra orientation for some other reason.

Are you sure? We just took that survey about next year’s calendar and I haven’t seen anything since.

I agree. Haven't heard anything official from the school yet. It seems as though they usually start the same week as DCPS.

Unimpressed??? Especially when compared to BASIS?
Are you trying to fool yourself?

If you read the top paragraph of the survey site it says school will start on 8/22
