ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Let’s just go Grad Year for soccer and let the madness begin. 15 year old 8th graders will make the game more fun to watch.

Not an advantage or cheating if everyone can hold back their kids “if” they really care that much and thinks it’s necessary.

Most families and kids will not even want to take the option because it’s silly.

1. RAE exists no matter what, just the months with the advantage differ.
2. Club teams understandably use RAE and their teams are disproportionate towards kids born in the first 6 months.
3. BY does not align with college recruitment by grad year and a lot of BY studs struggle and wash out in college when they go up against older kids. That's why colleges want Grad Year or at least school year. That would orient the feeder program (club soccer) to more align with their recruitment.

Good summary.

It is hard for many because parents want advantages for their kids but don't want to acknowledge them and parents stand up for their kids if they perceive an unfair situation for their kids.

And a shocking number of people can't handle change or anything different from their childhood or views different from their preconceived notions or new information that goes against their model of the world.

Also, coaches and clubs as a whole overinflate their scouting and training abilities and anybody that attacks their opinions as the soccer savants they think they are or their business model becomes their enemy. And that changing a date range in a computer system being such a time consuming endeavor is such a huge red herring.

A fair situation will be to have birth year and school year at some of the highest levels of youth soccer and some of the youngest to attempt to address the relative age effect. Will be interesting to see if this works. But school alone caused problems and birth year alone caused problems. The reasons for wanting only birth year or school year alone (needing inter league tournaments, crowning some national champion) are way less than having both (addressing the relative age effect and allowing players to reach their full potential.)

Pick the the league you want for your kid, birth year or school year, and don't begrudge those that make a different choice. It's not hard, it really is that easy.

This is 100% correct. Best thing for kids is having both systems.

Maybe not for figuring out who the best U13 team is but if people are thinking long term this is the best thing we could hope for.

I’m here to understand the communications, if any from ECNL directly. Has anyone received anything directly from their ECNL Director? Do you think any chance ECNL will still try to proceed with 25/26 implementation? I guess more info to come early March after that large meeting/conference….

I think there is a less than 1% chance ECNL does any change for next year. Doesn’t mean they won’t tell clubs how to prepare for the following year, but there will be no change to the BY registration for 25/26.

Hearing tounaments will be SY and League will be BY for 25. Buckle up.

my ecnl director communicated to my entire U17 girls team, which has 13 of 16 trapped players which are currently in 10th grade, grade 2027 that 100% ECNL were moving to grad year and that the 13 2027's would stay at U17 instead of moving up to u18/u19 like it is now and the 3 2026's 11th graders on her team would move up to the U19 as expected.

No change for BY registration. We might see more opportunities for showcases and trapped players with a waiver system. U13-15.

More details to be ironed out.

High probability we see this for all US club tournaments and showcases.

Will have tournament teams and league teams. Anyone who does not start early will fall behind.

The guidelines have to be well established first. Will have all that done in a few months.

Did anything happen in the last 75 or so pages? Missed a few weeks and need a summary.

Short answer is “you missed nothing”

Where is the waiver and/or SY tournament info coming from? Valid source?

This is being discussed by US Club. Which a friend of mine works for regarding the tournaments allowing guest players that align with SY teams.
Still TBD how many per team and things like that.

The waiver stuff is only ECNL not for everyone.

Good chance ECNL showcases will allow SY players for showcases not for league games. Again still TBD.

Ok…so the ecnl director of the u17 team told his team that the trapped players are staying where they are and the current Q1/2 are going to u19…is this for 2025?
