Virginia is a blue state. Maryland should learn from Virginia.

My unscientific observation and opinion:

Virginia is no longer “purple” let alone “red.” You could say it’s just NoVa, but NoVa has grown far beyond Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax Co and Richmond has grown quite blue too. The rural conservative parts are being outnumbered by urban Democrats, like it or not.

A closer observation shows that Virginia likes to elect sensible, pragmatic, moderate Democrats who are winning.
Look at Jennifer Wexton. A moderate who easily won over Trump-lite.
Look at Danica Roem. Yes, she may claim to fame as the first open trans woman but identity politics progressivism is not what she ran on - she cares about traffic!
Governor Ralph Northam is also a good example of a classy pragmatic moderate.
Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun and beyond have led the way in electing socially liberal, fiscally responsible electeds who have nurtured the growth of a cultural and economic powerhouse.

Now, let’s cross the Potomac and you have..no offense...a mess.
Why? Because Maryland Democrats have gone off the deep end. They nominate a diehard social justice warrior and leftist Ben Jealous, only to be shown the door by “centrist” Republican Larry Hogan who will be a rude awakening for liberals as he doesn’t have to play nice anymore to get elected...especially if Hogan has greater GOP aspirations.
Locally, Marylanders are electing socialists. They are sending a horde of far Leftists to Annapolis and the Chavista King to the Executive seat in Montgomery. And they had plenty of opportunities to elect sensible moderates, but they blew it. So, one of two things will happen to Maryland:
It will go the way of the Rust Belt, economically and politically like Michigan, as jobs flee and a dwindling tax base leave crumbling infrastructure and high crime. A fed up electorates swing the pendulum the other way and vote populist right, like the rust belt votes for Trump, and it will be a long way back.
OR, which is more likely based on Maryland voters I know, they will continue to swing and vote hard left and bury their heads in the sand about their economic viability and go the way other Socialist experiments have gone.

Ummm,

The only reason VA elected “moderate” Dems is there are many Independents that would not vote for ultra-liberal Dems.

However, many Dems here in VA want the same agenda for VA as for MD. Same thing will happen in VA as Democrats move In from liberal states.

I’m from Mass.

Taxes sucked and corrupt as hell. Schools sucked too and so much wasted money on illegals.....Lots of tech companies could not compete with the high cost of doing business.

I came to VA for lower taxes, better schools, better job options. As more people move in from Mass, NY, Maryland they vote the same way that will raise their taxes and give more money to social services. Hence, they will create the same problem that caused them to complain and move in the first place.

How many people move to VA from MD since they are fed up with Taxes, policy and then vote the same way that ruined MD.

So what you’re saying is you like cities that attract business and high paying jobs, but you don’t like it when the smart people that come for those jobs vote?
I’m sure you can find a rural village in Mississippi where you can stick to people who think and vote like you.

I'd say the OP is mostly correct. VA is liberal but not off the deep end like MD. Our state legislative body is still pretty conservative though. Overall we are much better run than MD or DC.

VA is behind being as liberal as MD by several years. Give it a few more years and it will be like MD. The more educated class you have, the more the area becomes liberal.

Libs are ruining yet another formerly conservative state.

They move in to escape the high taxes and nanny state hellholes that they fled, and immediately start turning their new home into a high tax nanny state hellhole.

It’s a mental illness.

The sky is falling! Maryland is the new Venezuela!

Except MD leads in median income and in public education. Gosh! It sounds like Maryland is more like Finland than Venezuela! The horror!

I agree with OP actually. Hopefully Virginia will be a role model for socially liberal and fiscally moderate pro-business pragmatism.

Must've been two days before another MD bash thread from Virginia poster?! What took so long?

I agree with the OP that Virginia elects more moderate, pragmatic Democrats than MD.

Western MoCo aligns much more closely to VA but the areas in the east are very leftist and the term social justice warrior doesn't get eye rolls but claps. The mess in MD does reflect the people who come out and vote in the greatest numbers. I don't see this changing anytime soon. The east can be social warriors because they are funded by the west. The people in the west can't do much about it other than leave which many do and end up in VA.

It wasn’t that long ago that the cooch wanted to stick a wand in every single pregnant lady in the commonwealth

Thank goodness we’ve beaten back that bullshit

And we’re going to get some common sense gun legislation passed in the home of the NRA, too

And a nova female delegate is now the head of the party caucus. Can I get a hell yeah?

Too bad NoVa can't kick the NRA out.
