I am possibly moving to DC next year and trying to plan ahead for my job search. I am currently teaching at a Title I middle school in Brooklyn, NY, so I have no problem working in a high-poverty community or school with low test scores, etc. My larger priorities are: supportive administration, good school-wide structures and discipline routines, and community/collaboration among staff, families, students, etc. I'd ideally prefer a traditional public school but am open to charters as well.
So DCUM, where should I look into? Particularly would love to hear from DCPS teachers, but am very open to parent experiences as well! Thanks. |

| McKinley Middle. It is on-site with a well performing high school. Not great test scores but it is competently managed. |
| Do you speak Spanish at all? If so, consider MacFarland. |

What is your subject area?
Inspired Teaching middle school is also one to look into |
Depends what you are teaching? What is your content area? |
| OP here. Thanks for all the replies! My content area is ELA. I took Spanish in high school and college but am not fluent ...I know enough for passable communication with parents, for example, but probably not enough for a full bilingual environment. |
Still, that's nice. You might be able to make it as an English-speaking teacher at MacFarland's dual language program. |
| There will be a new middle school opening in ward 4 next year that you might want to check out as well. I don’t think they’ve named it yet but it will starting with a 6th grade and adding a new grade each year for the next two years. |
For now it is Coolidge Middle aka New North Middle. You could probably find a job very easily if you are willing to work at one of the feeders that currently goes through 8th and ride out the transition of moving kids and staff into the new building for consolidated middle school. |

Op, just be aware that Title I in other districts is nothing like title I in DCPS. You do not have to believe me on this one, but you will see in the fall.
That being said- look for a school with veterans (not vetern admin, that does note exist). In the interview process ask to see their insight data. |

OP, do you have an area of town you would like to live in? Traffic is bad here and the public transportation is waaaaaay worse than it is in New York.
I suggest you consider Jefferson for metro proximity and a nice fun area for a young professional to live, and Coolidge for affordability. |

| That's most of DCPS, not just Coolidge |
