Are there college shuttles from...

VCU, JMU, UVA, VA TECH, and W&M to Northern VA? If so, where do they arrive/leave from?

Time for travel?

Greyhound operates between Charlottesville, Norfolk, Richmond, DC and Springfield

When I was at UVA, there was a private company that ran a bus from VT to UVA to Vienna metro station on Fridays and the reverse on Sundays. Not sure if it's still around.

Go search "[XYZ College] Ride Board" on Facebook. There are hundreds of NoVA students at the aforementioned colleges and your child would always be able to catch a ride home and back to campus on any given weekend. (And even more options just before/after breaks.)

Yes, there are bus companies that do this, though I don’t think they are run by the colleges. The ones I know of have one bus outbound on Friday and one back to school on sunday, so the times have to work for you. They are not cheap, either - like $70.

All this is third-hand from my college kid who is in school out of state but has friends at Virginia schools.

Oh - and like PP, it’s to/from the Vienna metro. We live nearby so I don’t know if there are other buses to other areas, or if we are just lucky to be near the one bus stop.

+1
At least many years ago there was a bus service (not greyhound) that would drop off/pick up at Vienna metro. I used it a few times. It was all college kids. A bit pricey. It was a long trip though bc we had to stop at the other colleges (I was the last stop -VT).

William and Mary contracts with a company that provides a shuttle bus to and from the Franconia metro during breaks (I don't think it runs every weekend.) They also were able to get one when the students were evacuated for Hurricane Florence in September.

Amtrak is walking distance to W&M's campus - my son has been using the train and we pick him up at the King Street station. They just had a cyber Monday sale and I was able to buy a one way ticket for $24 for him. I think its normally about $35. Cheaper than me driving down and back to pick him up.

Forgot to add - the Amtrak between Williamsburg and Alexandria is 3 1/2 hours. The bus company that W&M contracts with is Oleta Coach Lines and their price is $37 but they only operate during the breaks (Fall break, Thanksgiving, Spring break, etc.) You can catch the train every day of the week but the price fluctuates based on demand and how far in advance you get the ticket - just like the airlines.

Tech doesn't operate HomeRide.

Just be ware that you are buying a ticket from a bus company and the schools aren't involved in any way.
