Surprise #1: that basically none of the DMV is on that list. As much as we complain about costs, this area is absolutely under-valued relative to other 1st world capitals and CA/NY. The more tech we draw to this area, the more we will go up. This goes to show that the DMV has a lot of headway until we reach a price ceiling.
Suprise #2: so many crappy towns in NorCal are worth insane amounts of money. My family lived in NorCal for decades. I know all about Contra Costa, Burlingame, etc. These places have been "meh" for decades, but are solely worth big $$$ because of the proximity of so much tech money. Even in Oakland 94618 the average price is $1.45m! Absolutely bonkers. Totally makes sense - resort town premium. That said, I'm really surprised that there are no resort towns from Colorado or Utah on that list. Park City, Vail, Aspen, and Boulder are huge $$$$. |

This area has healthy 401Ks, bank accounts, defined benefit pensions, and P&L statements. But not the crazy housing you see on the west coast or northeast. I'll take it. DC is a much saner way to live. |

better weather though  I totally agree, DC is expensive but not as insane, there is affordable housing even in its priciest parts thanks to the still healthy supply or fugly old housing stock. I have a friend living in one of these overrated CA towns in a totally fugly ranch less than 1500 sq.ft even worse than DC metro famous shit shacks and it's nearing 1.5 mil for that tiny POS. No thanks.

No CA county? Where are all the CA counties? How do people in all those expensive zip code in CA pay for these houses? Where is DC? So, the wealth is not in DC or the close-in suburbs. But if you live in Loudoun county, DCUM sees you as a loser who couldn't afford DC. |
