Committee on overcrowding in the Wilson feeder pattern

Anonymous
Did the DCPS Committtee that was formed last year to assess and advise on overcrowding in Wilson Feeder pattern schools ever issue a report? I can’t find one on any website and I called DCPS and the person I spoke to didn’t know anything about the group. I ask as I see budgets and building priorities being discussed and released for next year with no mention of this assessment. Thanks for any information.

Looks like it is still ongoing.

Actually no, my bad. Seems to have stalled out for lack of a good solution. But I think the mention of earlier reboundarying in the MFP was a hint.

Let's put some Rocketship and KIPP schools in Ward 3. They're supposed to be good enough for the rest of the city, so they're good enough for Upper Caucasia, right?

How does that help overcrowding at Wilson?

It would be a high school. If downtown and the Mayor think these charter high schools are good enough for the rest of the rest of the city, why are they not a solution for the Wilson boundary?

Ha! Excellent point.
I work in Ward 8 and have interacted with those schools on behalf of clients. I wouldn’t send my dog to those schools let alone my child!

Yes, why not? Has the Mayor said anything about this as an option? You bring a good charter high school (eg, Latin) to a neighborhood with no charter options and families that already send kids to schools outside the ward for high school, you are likely to get some traction.

I think this is one thing that is behind the idea of improving Coolidge. Unfortunately their plan for Coolidge does not address the real issues so I don't think anything will change.

Where is the space in Ward 3 for a charter HS?

How about a task force to ferret out residency fraud at Wilson and in the Wilson feeder pattern? There are estimates that as many as ten percent of Wilson students in fact are Maryland resident. Root them out and DC would ease a lot of overcrowding.

Latin started at the church on Mass and Idaho. St. Ann's in Tenleytown closed the school a few years ago. A new private school is starting at the empty space on CT and Van Ness.

It seems that there are a bunch of spaces available.

DO you have any sources for these "estimates" beyond DCUM musings and super sleuths counting MD license plates?
