Pros/cons |
| What is LAT? |
| Living apart together...not to be confused with long-distance |
| Why? |
| What does living apart together mean? |
It means you are in a fully committed relationship but you do not co-habitat. |
Like you have separate houses but are married/not separated? This is a thing? |
| My dream would be living in a duplex. I love my partner but we have very different ideas of home organization/ comfort |
|
My Aunt did this for over 20-25 years. It was a 2nd marriage for both. The kids didn’t get along. So they lived 1-2 miles apart in different houses. They had dinner together and spent weekends together. But slept in different houses. Even after the kids left, they did this. They just recently moved in together (both in their 60’s).
Worked for them. |
| My parents have been married for almost 60 years and have separate apartments. |
| Me, I suppose. Together 8 years, fully committed relationship. We live a 5 minute walk apart in separate places. It's not really the forever plan, but we both really enjoy the setup. I really, really love living alone. We are so close, we can go between apartments but still have the luxury of pure alone time in our own spaces. I just can't think of how much money we spend doing this, but it's otherwise pretty great. |
Do you sleep together or separately in your own places? |
Together on the weekends, separately during the week for the most part with occasional mid-week sleepovers. |
| My SO and I are in our late 50's and we are very committed to each other but we live about ten minutes apart. He really likes his place and I like mine and we also both like our own quiet time. We spend about 4-5 nights a week together with a couple of weeknights off. We both keep plenty of things at each other's place so I never really have to pack anything. We are both in good shape financially so the double expense isn't a big problem. We both plan on retiring in a couple of years and we've been discussing getting a warm weather winter place that we would share. |
| This sounds so dreamy. |
