Tanning bed for keratosis pilaris?

Anonymous
I’ve hesrd UV exposure can treat keratosis pilaris. Mine is bad right now on my arms and thighs and butt and all the lotions and exfoliant aren’t cutting it.

I’m torn. I used to tan in high school a little bit. I’m super pale and it only ever made me more freckles. I lived in Alaska so it was just a relaxing warm after school thing that a lot of girls did, but I really regret it and have even gone so far to say that they should be illegal! But I’m really curious if it will help my bumpy skin. I was thinking I would cover my face and chest with a towel.

Not worth it right?? Talk me out of it!

It never helped mine. What lotions are you using?

Right now I’m using a combo of Amlactin, stridex salicylic acid pads, and a lotion with urea and lactic acid. Plus Cerave for general moisturizing. Thinking about trying prescription retin-A but seems like it could be costly for pretty large areas.

Have you seen a derm? I find with mine less is more, so I do occasional salicylic acid and moisturizer like Cerave

Tanning bed, if it worked, would be a short term solution with long term consequences.

I have heard that some people have luck with laser treatments- maybe look into that in addition to the best daily exfoliation you can manage.

I use the Cerave SA lotion twice a day and it helps a lot.

Don't age your skin!

You're over treating. No exfoliating unless it is chemical. Use only amlactin and a thick, fragrance/everything free lotion.

This is what worked for me and removed most of my KP in two months -
- Start of by exfoliating using Nair hair remover - all over the KP area. Follow directions and wash off after 3 minutes.
- Aloe gel after nair exfoliation. Gentle exfoliation with dry wash cloth when skin is dry and then lather on moisturizer with glycerine:water (1:1) + aspirin powder + Tree tea oil.
- Next day - massage sesame oil on skin before bath. Wait for 1 hour, then use any gentle cleanser (cerave or glycerine soap) scrub in circular motion with soft side of puf-buf pas, follow with moisturizer with added glycerine:water mix (1:1) + crushed aspirin powder + Tree Tea oil.

Do the bolded daily. I got generic aspirin from dollar store and used my coffee grinder to make it into a powder, to add to my normal body lotion, + added glycerine:water 1:1) + few drops of tea-tree oil in the lotion too. KP happens because your skin clogs the pores. Exfoliation and moisturizing is the key. A good scrub with puf buf will physically loosen the skin and remove it, but also strip off the moisture from your skin. If you feel that your skin becomes dry at bedtime, rub dry skin with a dry wash cloth (without any fabric softener used in it) and then use your moisturizer. Adding tea-tree oil will kill off any fungal infection that may happen because you are using so much of oil and moisturizer to your skin. It provides food for the yeast already on your skin, so you need to take care of that too. Good luck.

BTW - my moisturizer hack also makes your skin super silky. Something that is not what you associate with KP sufferers. Don't forget to drink lots of warm water with lemon through out the day.

You are willing to trade KP for pre,a true aging and skin cancer. Really?

AmLactin and sun are the things that help my KP. In the winter, I get very little sun. If my KP were out of control, I’d do a tanning bed every so often. People who act like you’re nuts for considering it don’t know how aggravating this issue can be.

Have any of you tried fish oil or other fats for your KP? I read this can help and tried it for my son who has it pretty bad and it cleared up. He finished the bottle of fish oil a while ago and now it's back! I keep meaning to get some more, but it seems like this helped his KP and I was wondering if anyone else has had success with this?

This is OP, about a year ago I tried taking cod liver oil because research indicates that KP could be because of a Vitmain A deficiency, which is really hard to find in food sources. Basically liver is about it. I didn’t take the oil long enough to see a difference but I’m thinking about trying again or taking dessicated liver capsules.

Mine was pretty bad on the legs. Kind of managed it with glycol it acid body lotion but not 100%. A couple months ago I stopped the acids and exfoliation and only used Moisturel body lotion as needed after shower or before bed. Change wasn’t immediate but dare I say may leg KP is 95% gone!

Stridex pads. Then find one of those LED light beds - like a tanning bed, but beneficial.
