And spent most of it gambling...

I am stunned.
Why does this horrible person get supervised release until his sentencing in *February*?! People with far less serious crimes are not permitted this freedom. Is it because he wears a suit and fits a certain profile? He’s expected to repay the money? How the heck is he ever going to do that?

I feel sick. This @sshole gambled away my tax money. He robbed the county of business growth opportunity.

Disgusting. And no one noticed. We have a huge backslapping buddy government receiving high salaries and benefits from our taxes and then they’re misappropriating funds on top of that. Great!

And meanwhile this black teenager was left to rot in Rikers for 3 years awaiting trial for stealing a backpack (later they found it wasn’t even him.) because his parents couldn’t post bail. He later committed suicide because he was so traumatized.

That’s what gets me. No one noticed. Who else is embezzling from MoCo? Are there better controls in place now?

No I’m sure they’re not going to be watching more. Look at what the school board was doing - living high on the hog with no qualms:
https://wjla.com/news/education/mcps-reimburses-boe-members-for-pricey-meals-taxi-fares-and-more-104758

MoCo just shells out the money to every special interest group that begs them (they host them regularly!), they spend millions on a crappy curriculum after being wined and dined, they grow the govt bigger and bigger to ‘study how to improve things’ - they just spend spend spend.

Honestly they need an independent auditor and advocate for the people. That would be money well spent - an audit to tell them what to cut out. Which would be a lot.
When was the last time they cut the administrative fat out of the schools?

The school administrators also don’t need to be taking trips , eating out and going to ‘seminars’ and ‘meetings’ like they’ve been doing. Instead of talking about cutting programs for the kids and teachers and raising taxes it’s time to start cutting admin costs. Stop having parties with our tax money instead of serving the people.

Our county council members are on all kinds of boards for county facilities too, being wined and dined and influenced. Someone should do more reporting on this behind the scenes culture and how it influences spending and policy.

Awful. The whole system is broken. This is what happens when politicians hand out leadership positions to their friends and supporters rather than treating them like a job and focusing on competence. You get incompetent people who are more concerned with promoting themselves than they are with managing a government agency. Steve Silverman, who would have been Bang's boss, was a disaster. How could he not notice this happening?

Elrich will be more of the same. Voted for term limits to get new blood in? Watch -- I guarantee you that both Roger Berliner and George Leventhal will be named directors of County departments. Probably big ones too, like HHS. Nevermind that the primaries showed that the voters of Montgomery County clearly did not want these two making anymore decisions for us.

Ike Leggett's statement said that the County had retained independent auditors to look into it. I hope that report is released.

And even though I doubt he'll be any better, I hope, really, really hope, that Elrich will put the County above politics and make some smart decisions. Heading government agencies should be about the best person for the job, not rewarding your supporters. And we need to cut WAY back on our community grants until we fix our schools and infrastructure. We need to fix the foundation before adding more stories.

Rumor has it George will get HHS and Roger will get Environmental Protection. I think George would actually do a good job. He’s smart and knowledgeable. But he’s a bear to work with. Roger.....meh.

This story made me so very very sad. Unfortunately what happened to this poor kid has happened before and will happen again. Posting monetary bail is just another way to force poor people to Plead to crimes they did not commit. And when they can’t post bail, they end up doing more time than they would have had they simply pled. Our justice system has been broken , corrupt and dysfunctional for a long time.

No!! They are both incompetent. And Leaventhal’s a violent weenie who can’t get along with anyone. He belongs in the private sector where they will social him via firing him when he acts badly.
