Is 100k enough to live in San Francisco for 2 people?

I got a university research position. It is not a teaching position. It's a permanent research position for a private university. My wife works from home right now but I am not sure if they will allow her to work from California. I KNOW it's not enough to buy a house etc etc but is it enough to gain experience for a few years and move somewhere else later? We do not have a lot of school debt and our car is paid off. We can live within our budget.

Uh... probably not. Efficiency apt is 3500 per month

Forgot to mention health insurance is excellent and relocation cost is great as well. We live in PA now. This would be my first job out of grad school.

I live in SF proper and support a child on $85k. There are apartments for rent in my building that are one bedrooms going for $2500. Hope that helps.

Where do you live in SF? Where would you live if you work at San Francisco university? Would it be easier to take public transportation to work or drive?

So SF University? I was just there this summer and I think 100K would not be enough. Not without paid housing.

It would be really hard

Your wife will need to get a job of some sort.

if you do not have kids then I think you can do it. Live somewhere cheap and small. You don't need space if it's just the two of you. Job opportunities are good there so it might open doors for you.

For a first job out of grad school, if you are willing to keep living like grad students, yes. To make a life there, no.
