H1N1 and kids with autism

Anonymous
Hi all,
My daughter had the H1N1 vaccine this week at one of the DC clinic and so far everything is fine. I have a friend though, whose son is autistic on the severe end and also has a very weak immune system due to another condition. She's seriously debating whether to give him the vaccine and risk another regression with the autism due to the thimerosal in it, or risking the flu, with the consequences it may have for him. Does anyone know the name of the manufacturer that made the vaccine without any mercury preservatives and where/how to get it? I told her I'd try to find out so she can try to get a hold of that type of vaccine. THANKS!

Here are the ingredients of the different shots. I just got one for my son, but his had thimerosal (Sanofi Pasteur). I don't think the thimerosal-free version is available most places yet.

Tell your friend that even the ones that contain mercury have 25 mcg of mercury. This is less mercury than a can of tuna fish.

Whatever. I'd rather eat a tuna sandwich than be *injected* with mercury. It's different.

thanks for the link and information.
Her son had made great progress and had a big regression, which they linked to some shots he'd gotten a little while before. That's why she's very weary about it but doesn't know what to do.
I agree though, and that's why I have given my daughter the shot.

I too am waiting for a thimerisol-free vaccine. I don't know of any that are available yet, but I take it as a good sign that Mont. County is now (even if one time only) offering thim-free shots for pregnant women.

She needs to focus on the actual risk to her child. Her child has an immune disorder. That is not a speculative risk. Meanwhile, there are more than enough studies debunking the thimerosal / autism link.

The scare tactic books and web sites are fine for those who can afford to be wrong. But when there are serious consequences for being wrong, you have to go with published research. Anything else is irresponsible.

I'm wondering who linked her son's regression to the shots? Any shots he would have received in the past several years would have been thimerosal-free. It's unlikely that the shots caused his regression. That being said, I completely understand her concern. If he's over four then he might be able to get the shot that pregnant woman are getting, which has only trace amount of thimerosal. Also--supposedly there will be preservative-free vaccines available to pregnant women in MoCo very soon...maybe she can talk to them ahead of time to determine if she can bring her son in to get it?

I know, and I agree. However, her son has a disorder that has only been diagnosed in a few kids. They don't know much about it or how/if it relates to the autism. She's not one to believe in the link autism/shots, however the regression happened right after his first shots, which had to be delayed by a few years due to him being on steroids for many months with a suppressed immune system (could't receive live vaccines while on the steroids).
It's a complicated situation and I don't blame her for second guessing her decisions. In this case either decision could be really serious.

I don't blame her for being concerned. But it seems that the risks associated with the thimerosal are vague, unproven, anecdotary, etc. On the other hand, the risks of contracting influenza (especially in a high-risk individual) are real and proven. So the benefit of the vaccine probably outweighs the risk. IMO of course.

Her son had his first vaccines a few years later than most kids because he was on steroids for a long time and could not receive live vaccines. After many months off the meds he got the shots and a little while later, a big regression. I don't know if/why she links it to the shots, or if she's just being extra vigilant. If that'd happened to me I'd be weary too, whether studies can't prove the link. I, personally, have never seen any conclusive research linking the 2, but I also don't have a kid in that situation...
I sent her the info from the website above. and now I'm PISSED myself. When I took my DD for the shot at the clinic last week, after she got her shot, I heard a mom request the "prefilled syringe, which was NOT given to us as an option. After reading this website I realize that's the Novartis with only 1 mcg thimerosal in it, as opposed to the regular Novartis with 25 mcg my DD received. I'm pissed at myself for not even knowing the trace one was already available, and at the clinic for not letting parents know!

OP again - Check if your clinic has the Novartis prefilled single dose. That has only trace concentrations of thimerosal. They had it at our clinic in DC last week but they don't offer it, you have to request it specially. I just figured that out... grrrrr...

I know being a stepmom to a profoundly autistic son isn't the same as being a mom, but I must say I really empathize with her. It's very difficult trying to balance often-competing health issues that many kids with autism have.

Hi OP...Most Ped's have ordered the thirmesol free ones and are expecting delivery in the next week or 2. Ours are expecting them by the 2nd week of Nov. If she thinks she can hold off another week maybe wait for that.

I would have no doubt chosing between expeculation (vaccine and autism) and actual facts (supressed immune system and vaccine )
