2019-2020 School Calendar Approved

Anonymous
The School Board voted yesterday to approve next year's school calendar. They went with Option 1 (as posted on the MCPS website), which does include a full spring break. They made it clear, however, that people should not expect a full spring break the following year because it is an election year and the calendar will be more difficult to create.

Rosh Hashanah in 2020 is on a weekend so they can swap that day for Election Day and should be same number of days off.

BOE will never swap the days because then there would be no fuel to "Blame Governor Hogan" campaign.

It’s not that simple. They’ll also close for the inauguration in January.

Actually, that would be awesome if we had a 5 day weekend in January 2021. Monday the 18th is the observance of Dr. King’s birthday and Wednesday the 20th will be Inauguration Day. MCPS needs to have a professional development day on Tuesday the 19th.

That would be great!

But it actually is Hogan’s exec order that dictates the calendar. He would say that’s a good thing so it’s not actually blaming.

They never should have added that rule. Wonder if they will ever change it back..seems ridiculous to close especially for second term inaugurations.

You have a point; if Trump is re-elected, turnout will be sufficiently low that school cancellations won’t be warranted.

It was a knee jerk reaction to one event.

They have to approve the calendar well before the 2020 election. They’ll close for Inauguration Day without regard to political events.

This is the first presidential election post Hogan’s executive order. No reason to close for inauguration now that there are limited days off. Would rather have spring break.

Then maybe he can just order them to be open that day. Seemed to work ok before.

Why? Why do we close for that.

And I think the jewish, easter, and muslim holidays are a waste of time as it is a secular school district. But Inauguration Day??? Just no
